July is starting off with a bang for Sporting Kansas City, who continue to make moves during the 2026 FIFA World Cup break. The team announced the signing of 25-year-old center back, Moises Mosquera, from Liga MX side FC Juarez.

The transfer doesn’t include information on the amount of the fee, though one likely was needed with him being signed by Juarez through the summer of 2028. Mosquera did sign a five-year contract with Sporting KC. He will also occupy an international roster spot.

“We are excited to welcome Moises to Kansas City,” President of Soccer Operations & General Manager David Lee said. “Moises has committed his long-term future to our club, and he fits with our recent model of identifying players with their best years still ahead. He has experience at the highest level in Europe and in Mexico, where he was a standout performer across the last three seasons and earned experience against MLS opponents in Leagues Cup. Moises has all the attributes of a modern center back with excellent athletic and physical characteristics combined with good technical ability that is critical to our style of play.”

Born in Colombia, Mosquera actually got his start in the Portugal youth system of Maritimo and made his professional debut with them in the Portuguese topflight in late 2020. He spent the next couple seasons there until Maritimo was relegated and he moved to FC Juarez in Mexico. He’s played the last three years in Mexico, including appearances in Leagues Cup against MLS sides FC Dallas, St. Louis City and the Colorado Rapids.

He’s proven to be one of the league’s best defenders in his most recent season. “Mosquera ranked among the league’s top defenders for interceptions (99th percentile), aerial duels won (91st) and clearances (91st).”

Sporting KC Fit

SKC have one of the league’s worst defenses so far in 2026. David Lee has bolstered that defense during the break adding Or Blorian (CB) and Emir Karic (LB). With Mosquera signing a five-year deal, presumably he’s thought to be a starting caliber player. When Sporting KC return to the pitch on July 16th, they could have an entirely new look backline outside of right back. Even if they aren’t all ready for that game, it seems the defense will look quite different for the rest of the year.

Adding Mosquera brings Sporting KC to an astounding seven CBs on the roster: Mosquera, Blorian, Ian James, Diego Borges, Ethan Bartlow, Wyatt Meyer and Jansen Miller. It’s unusual to carry so many CBs and if roster room needs to be cleared, they could be traded, loaned out or released. Many of the club’s defenders are at or near the league minimum salary.

This move also occupies an international roster spot. The team had no more confirmed spots available, so this likely means at least one player has received a green card. The five-year deal is also potentially a way to spread the possible transfer fee out over multiple seasons and fit Mosquera’s fee and salary in a more budget friendly position on the roster.

This is the second addition to the team since David Lee was reported to say he was looking to add four to seven players during the summer transfer window. The window runs July 13th through September 2nd, so there are surely more moves coming.

Highlights

CB highlights aren’t always the most exciting, but there was some insight to be gained from these 2024 highlights.

Mosquera has good acceleration. He consistently caught up with players he was out of position on. He made key passes with both of his feet, which is a need since someone has to play left CB for this team.

One concern is how often he went to ground to make a tackle. All the highlights are good plays (of course), but it could be a bad sign because going to ground is often a last resort. In his 122 games played at mostly first division teams, he has 33 yellow cards and three red cards.

Its my understanding that both Manu and Joveljic got their green cards and so at the moment there is still one more int spot.

I like to see us build out of the back first. I miss the days of staunch defensive units. I hope this pans out!
