About five weeks after it leaked out, the signing of Andre Luiz by Sporting Kansas City is officially over the line. Today, the club announced a club-record transfer fee was paid out to Greek club Olympiacos FC.

He cannot play until he receives his P1 visa and the team gets his international transfer certificate. He will occupy Sporting KC’s final open international roster spot.

Luiz has signed a five-year deal through the 2030-31 season. He’s only 24 years old now, so he’ll play in Kansas City, or they’ll retain team control, through most of his prime soccer years.

“We are extremely excited to welcome Andre to Sporting Kansas City,” President of Soccer Operations & General Manager David Lee said. “Andre is a dynamic player with pace, directness and technical ability who is coming off an excellent season in Portugal and Greece. At the age of 24, he fits with our model of adding quality players to our roster that still have their prime years ahead of them. Andre was highly coveted in some of the top leagues in the world, so we are delighted that he has decided to commit his long-term future to Sporting KC.”

Some of the clubs that were interested in Luiz were rumored to be Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) and Sunderland in England and Benfica in Portugal.

The massive transfer fee makes Luiz a Designated Player, a spot that was vacated yesterday with the sudden departure of Manu Garcia. He’s one of two currently on the roster, along with Dejan Joveljic. As things stand, that means the team can add a third DP and two more U-22 initiative players, or three more U-22s without adding a third DP.

MLS insider, Tom Bogert, said yesterday on Soccerwise the plan was for Sporting KC to add two more DPs this window. The summer transfer window is open until September 2nd.

What We Already Knew

Since this has been going on for over a month, lots of information had already leaked out about Luiz. His transfer fee is rumored to be $18 million with $4 million in add-ons. The previous club record was around $8 million for Alan Pulido (today the KC Star has a new number, just $7.5m for Pulido).

If all the add-ons are hit, that’s nearly a tripling of the prior record fee.

It feels really high, and it is. But it’s not as ridiculous as it looks on paper. We broke it down before, but the last time he was transferred (just back in January), he had offers nearly this high.

Why Andre Luiz’s $20M Price Tag Actually Makes Sense for Sporting KC

We also know that Luiz is an athletic freak. He’s 6’2″ and 175 pounds. Quite large for a winger with incredible pace. He’s big, strong and fast, something Sporting KC hasn’t consistently had in the attack in years. As a Brazilian, he has that stereotypical flair. He’s tricky and quick out of his moves. He’s also left footed and has primarily lined up on the right wing, so he can cut inside to his dominant foot. But he is a threat with both feet. The highlights are worth a watch.

Andre also had a breakout season last year in Portugal at Rio Ave. He had seven goals and six assists at the halfway point before moving to Olympiacos where he oddly barely played. The hope is he’ll look much more like the first six months of last season than the last.

David Lee is prepared to address the media in a few minutes and the KC Soccer Journal will bring you more after that press conference.

He's written about Sporting KC, the KC Current and SKC II for numerous platforms, including The Blue Testament, which was the precursor to the KC Soccer Journal. While his initial connection to Sporting KC was established in Phoenix covering preseason, he now resides in the Kansas City area, offering thorough analysis and a strong commitment to local soccer.
