Rumor: Sporting KC Offer Giant Fee for Brazilian Andre Luiz

It’s silly season with the MLS summer transfer window just about to open. Could Sporting Kansas City spend huge?

Sporting Kansas City are set to return to MLS play in a week, but the roster build is still a work in progress. A new rumor has Sporting KC making a $20 million offer for Brazilian winger Andre Luiz.

Greek reporter Nikos Kotsis, of Mega TV, is reporting the rumor.

Google Translate:

Kansas City has officially submitted a mammoth offer to @olympiacosfc for Andre Luiz. The amount for the Brazilian winger exceeds $20,000,000. The deal is likely to close in the next few hours. The player is awaiting information to travel to the US.

The story goes on to say “the discussions have not been completed.”

The fee is shocking, much like the $20 million asking price for Toulouse winger Yann Gboho. We’ve heard nothing new on Gboho, but this could be a sign SKC are open to multiple options, as Tom Bogert originally reported.

The number is particularly surprising because Luiz just moved to Greek club Olympiacos in January for €6.75 million (~$7.7m). Inside the story, it says the fee exceeds $20m (~€17.5m). Kotsis goes on to say that the fee could even exceed €20m (~$22.9m). That’s a huge increase in six months!

Kotsis says Wolverhampton Wolves (England) have also made an offer alongside Sporting KC.

Who is Andre Luiz?

André Luiz Inácio da Silva is a 24-year-old left-footed winger. He primarily lines up at right wing but has spent time at left wing and center forward.

Before arriving in Greece, he’s spent the rest of his career in Brazil or Portugal. His prior club, Rio Ave FC (Portuguese 1st division) is the one who sold him to Olympiacos (Greek 1st division). It’s worth noting, the owner of these two clubs is the same person, Greek shipping magnate and billionaire Evangelos “Vangelis” Marinakis.

Just a year before this recent transfer, he moved from Estrela Amadora (Portuguese 1st division) for €2.2m (~$2.5m).

Before coming to Portugal, he played for Brazilian superpowers Flamengo (Brazilian 1st division). He represented them at the U20 level after arriving from America Football Club (Brazilian 2nd division).

Is He Worth It?

Despite the rumored big jump up in transfer fee, Luiz barely played at Olympiacos. He had five appears in league play (292 minutes) and just a single assist. In the playoffs, he made another three sub appearances (37 minutes) with no goal contributions. He appeared two more times in UEFA Champions League (50 minutes), also without any goal contributions.

The season that earned him his big move was his most productive. He had seven goals and six assists in Portugal in the 2025-26 season over the course of 1,501 league minutes.

Long story short — his stats don’t justify such a record shattering transfer fee. Hopefully the numbers are just very wrong (or the rumor is complete nonsense). Either that, or President of Soccer Operations, David Lee, knows something we don’t.

Sporting KC Fit

Lee has said he wants to add attacking talent. A winger is likely still a position of need since the club has only added MLS veteran Calvin Harris and outside transfer Capita Capemba so far this season.

Speaking of Capita, he seems to consistently line up on the right. So, unless Luiz fits more on the left, or Capita is moving, having two higher priced players in the same position might not make sense.

If this fee is even close to accurate, Luiz would qualify as a Designated Player. That would mean the team would have filled all three of their spots, with Dejan Joveljic and Manu Garcia occupying the other spots. That also means the team would be allowed one less U22 Initiative signing and the team would only get $1 million of the $2 million in bonus GAM available to them for sticking to two DPs in the first half of the season.

Luiz would require an international roster spot, which Sporting KC may be out of (they appear to have one too many players now). Likely green cards are coming or a trade for an international spot would have to happen.

Highlights

This highlight reel, which leans heavy on his last season in Portugal, shows a guy almost exclusively lined up on the right. He’s got some of that Brazilian flair you’d expect to see. He’s definitely a bit tricky and quite fast.

Luiz also has some notable size. He clocks in at 6’2 and seems to be quite physical.

He also seems to very heavily favor his left foot. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
