The Kansas City Current returned to CPKC Stadium for the annual Teal Out game against Seattle Reign FC, a team that defeated them 3-0 in Washington this past spring. The Current kept the Reign from scoring multiple goals this time around and continued the unbeaten streak at home after a 1-1 draw.

With the home crowd behind them, the unbeaten home record, and the return of Lorena and Michelle Cooper to the starting XI, Kansas City hoped to have a much better result than their previous loss at Gotham last week. But the Current’s start was slow. Debinha moved to center forward, and Haley Hopkins started at left wing. The attack failed to create any significant chances in the first ten minutes. In the 11th minute, Seattle went up 1-0 on an own goal following a corner kick. Sophia Huerta’s service into the box was kneed into the goal by Kayla Sharples.

Being down 1-0, Kansas City’s attack pushed for the equalizer and found several shots on goal, finishing the first half with an xG of .61, 10 shots, but only one on target. Croix Bethune dazzled with her footwork and vision, and nearly gave the Current the goal they sought after, but her shot hit the top post and bounced back.

Kansas City returned for the second half and continued to press for the equalizer. In the 51st minute, Debinha converted a penalty kick after VAR confirmed a handball by Mia Fishel in the box. It was Debinha’s fifth goal of the season and 84th overall, adding to her tally as the all-time leading goalscorer across all NWSL competitions.

Despite the Current controlling the second half with 14 shots, 2 on target, and an xG of 2.69, and limiting Seattle to three shots, two on target, and an xG of .27, Kansas City could not score the game-winning goal to earn the much-needed three points. This was the third draw at CPKC Stadium this summer. Kansas City is currently 2-3-4 since returning from the summer break on July 3rd. The Current’s last win was on July 29 against Racing Louisville.

Siiiiigh. Don’t know if we can blame this one in Armas. Last year these games where we drastically outplayed the opponent but had to settle for a tie were in the road. Now that’s the story at home.

Chawinga should be back next game. Need to actually start putting points on the board, both in game and in the standings. This may not be last year’s juggernaut, but they shouldn’t be scuffling with the playoff line.
