Another one! KC Current lose on the road, falling 2-1 @ Gotham

A fast start could not give the Kansas City Current the win they needed on the road, as they lost (2-1) to Gotham FC and added another loss to their abysmal away record, now 2-8-1. Amelia White scored 22 seconds into the game, tying Michelle Cooper for the fastest goal in NWSL history.

White, already making the run, met up with Bethune’s beautifully placed through ball and gave Kansas City the early lead, surprising the NWSL defending champs (and probably everyone watching on Amazon Prime).

The lead lasted 12 minutes as the Current’s set-piece defending allowed Gotham to equalize in the 13th minute. Gabrielle Robinson, instead of clearing the ball away, settled the ball in the box and placed it right in front of Midge Purce, who sent it in for goal.

Kansas City nearly took the lead again in the 20th minute after Vanessa DiBenardo sent a ball into the box where Haley Hopkins was in position to score. Her shot went right to Ann-Katrin Berger, and the game remained 1-1. That would be the best opportunity for the Current this half. They gave the ball away easily and found themselves in a scuffle in the 33rd minute that nearly sent Elizabeth Ball out of the game with a red card. Ball appeared to have shoved Jordynn Dudley after Dudley and Kayla Sharples collided, and Dudley seemed to have clipped Sharples. VAR helped Muhammad Hassan rescind the red card, giving Ball a yellow instead.

In the 41st minute, Gotham fooled the Current defense as several Kansas City defenders lost their mark, focusing too much on Jaedyn Shaw and leaving Sam Kerr wide open to score the game-winning goal.

Gotham could have made it 3-1 in the second half when Jaelin Howell was left unchallenged and scored from outside the box in the 55th minute, but the goal was overturned by VAR for Sam Kerr being offside, giving Kansas City a lifeline to keep the game close.

But it would only be close in the final score. Statistically and tactically, Gotham owned this game, winning their first regular-season game against Kansas City, maintaining 64% possession, 16 shots, 10 on target, and an xG of 2.72. Kansas City, meanwhile: 5 shots, 3 on target, xG 1.76. Not even the return of Michelle Cooper in the 61st minute made any difference, and the Current now head back to Kansas City for two home games.
