Rumor: Sporting KC Increase Their Offer Near MLS Record for Andre Luiz

Three weeks ago, a rumor broke that Sporting Kansas City made a massive offer for Brazilian winger Andre Luiz. Since that time, that report has been confirmed by numerous sources. On top of that, new majority owner Peter Mallouk confirmed he’s making a substantial investment to improve the team quickly, promising the team will be “significantly better.” And David Lee confirmed he has no upper limit on his budget.

A new report has that Andre Luiz offer increasing substantially.

Notis Chalaris of Gazzetta is reporting a €22 million transfer offer will be made from Sporting KC to Olympiacos. That’s about $25 million USD. If it’s a true number, it would be the second highest fee in MLS history beyond Son Heung-min (about $26.5m).

Sport24 reporter, Nick Kotsis has the figure even higher at €24 million. That would be about $27.3m, making it the highest fee in MLS history.

The KC Soccer Journal reached out to Sporting KC and have received no reply at this time.

Reports are that Luiz was held out of a preseason friendly for Olympiacos and is keen to move to the United States. That game was yesterday, a 3-2 loss, to AZ Alkmaar (Netherlands).

If either of these figures are true, it will be hard for Luiz to live up to the figure. Then again, when you are a Designated Player, whether you are barely a DP or you are way over the threshold, you hit the cap the same way.

The 24-year-old almost certainly won’t be sold again for a larger fee, but it’s Peter Mallouk’s money. If this is how he wants to spend it, and it doesn’t stop him from spending again in the future, Sporting KC fans should probably just embrace it. He seemingly would make KC better on a quicker timeline than the original rebuild.

Another Report Says the Deal is Done

According to Brazilian outlet Globo, the fee isn’t quite as high as rumored, but it could climb. They have it at $22 million with only $18m fixed and another $4m in potential bonuses. They also said he’s signed a five-year deal with SKC, which makes sense to lock up a key player after spending so heavily to acquire him.

If Globo has the number right, and Luiz hits all the bonuses, the fee would be about the third highest in league history.

SKC Weren’t Alone in Their Pursuit

English Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers, or Wolves, were said to have had a €15 million offer rejected. Other reports say the prior €17.5m offer from KC was also rejected. Before coming to Olympiacos in January, Portuguese giants Benfica had an offer rejected as well.

With the player wanting to move and the fee being one of the highest sales in Olympiacos history, it would make sense if Sporting KC’s offer was accepted.

Why So Much Money?

There is a lot of confusion around the value of Luiz. There are reports of him moving for almost nothing (comparatively) in January and now the fee seems to have more than tripled. But there is more to the story, which we covered previously.
