Sporting KC attempt at a comeback falls short in Atlanta
Stephen Afrifa scored the lone goal for SKC
Sporting Kansas City fell 2-1 to Atlanta United FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta Sunday evening. With it appearing the Dejan JoveljiÄ era may be over with reports of the star striker transferring to Seattle Sounders, Sporting KC head coach RaphaĆ«l Wicky used Taylor Calheira and Shapi Suleymanov up top. The other change to the lineup from the midweek draw against St Louis was MoisĆ©s Mosquera back after serving his red card suspension.
Wicky addressed the reports of JoveljiÄ leaving immediately in the post-game press conference. “I know there has been a lot of speculations about Dejan. But at the moment, nothing is finalized. So I thought, or we thought, it was best not to include him in tonight’s game. So if there is something to announce in the upcoming hours or days, the club will do that.”
Atlanta’s starting lineup.
Atlanta scored first in the 13th minute when Miguel Almirón dribbled down Sporting KC’s right side. Mosquera was in position to defend, but Almirón’s dribbling twisted the SKC defender up off balance. Almirón then chipped a pass across the box to an undefended TomĆ”s Jacob running to the back post, where he easily put it in the back of the net.
Atlanta doubled the in the 24th minute. Almirón took the corner kick and placed the ball to the near post. ElĆas BĆ”ez headed the ball down in to the box where FafĆ Picault was running free from defenders and he flicked it in the SKC goal.
Right before halftime, SKC right back Jake Davis was subbed because of injury after a collision in the attack. Justin Reynolds replaced Davis.
In the second half, the tide shifted more in Kansas City’s favor. Atlanta dominated the first half but in the second SKC had more possession and shots, and it did pay off in the 70th minute. Calvin Harris went down the left side and played the ball into the box. Jayden Reid and Stephen Afrifa fought for the ball until Afrifa pounced and released a shot to the side netting past Lucas Hoyos. The goal brought the visitors back within one and spurred more attempts for SKC.
Sporting KC could not complete the comeback and fell on the road. It was the third game in a little over a week. A busy and emotional week that saw them lose at Colorado, draw rival St. Louis at home, and lose two Designated Players from their roster.

We are truly the worst.
Ugh.
I turned off the game at the half. Not sure I can take much more of that. My optimism got shanked last nightā¦
No DPs on the field surely hurt. SKC really did control the 2nd half. The timing of Dejan leaving was poor, because Atlanta were beatable.
Thankfully, Andre Luiz is arriving this week. Theoretically he’ll be available this weekend, but I suspect that’s a cameo and not a start.
I donāt think we would have been hoisting trophies this year. But I still canāt believe we are this bad. On paper, The think we have the acumen to be better than wooden spoon.
I canāt wrap my mind around this.
The beginning of the season roster was abysmal.
But they’ve improved it a ton since then. But as soon as they started to get the defense sorted, they get a few red card games, injuries, suspensions and suddenly can’t score goals.
Things this team is missing:
Things this team has: speed & work ethic
I’m trying to think of players on the roster that would start in any MLS team that has won at least half their games (perhaps we could expand that to ANY other MLS team). None come to mind. At least with Dejan, SKC had a very high quality striker. Ugh, Calheira had (4) touches in the first half. And Shapi…sigh. Someone on reddit asked if Shelton was available.
I think SKC fielded the worst quality team in a MLS game in the last 10 years. The first half sure looked like it. SKC made the second worst team in the league look like Real Madrid in the first half. Sure, the second half was better but was that Atlanta taking their foot off the gas or SKC actually playing better? It should have been a good game, but SKC never looked like they were in it. SKC is truly terrible (historically bad).
I quit caring last night. I’m pouring out the rest of my “give a crap” on this page. You won SKC…I am embracing apathy.
