Preview:

Sporting Kansas City head south to Frisco, Texas to take on FC Dallas, bringing their 2024 season to a close against a fellow eliminated Western Conference foe.

SKC head into the match with eyes set on the offseason in hopes of addressing, “What the hell happened?

But before all that, the task for the time being is ending the season on a high note and trying to walk away with three more points out of Toyota Stadium.

Across all competitions, Dallas and Kansas City squared off twice this season, both times at Children’s Mercy Park with the home team taking the victory.

The stakes are low in this final matchup, with SKC solidified as 13th in the conference and with Dallas’ only consolation prize being a potential bump up to 10th, depending on how Austin FC fairs in their final match. KC could leap over some Eastern Conference teams and impact their draft position.

Despite FC Dallas’ performance this season, they were significantly better at home (9W-5L-2D) than on the road (1W-10L-6D). A brief look into MLSsoccer.com’s Matthew Doyle’s “What we learned” series, breaks down some of the larger issues that plagued Dallas this season, including injuries to DP’s and key players, and a mid-season firing of their head coach.

With that being said, Dallas is led in goals by Peter Musa who ended with 15, which is tied for sixth most in MLS. Entering the final game of the season, no SKC player has hit the double-digit goal mark, though Willy Agada sits at nine.

As a team, both clubs were near the bottom of the league in goals allowed with Dallas on the receiving end of 55 goals and SKC 64.

Kansas City are also on a four game losing streak across all competitions, finding the back of the net just twice in those games and allowing 11. In Dallas’ last four games, they scored six and allowed seven for a 1W-2L-3D record, with their lone 3-1 victory coming at home against LAFC.

But it’s not all doom and gloom with these clubs as they both managed to have some players nominated for MLS Year-End Awards.

FCD Nominees:
Newcomer of the Year – Peter Musa
Goalkeeper of the Year – Maarten Paes

SKC Nominees:
Young Player of the Year – Jake Davis
Audi Goals Drive Progress Impact Award – Johnny Russell

It would be safe to assume that this matchup will not have many national eyes on it due to it having no Decision Day implications, but a win for either would make entering the offseason a tad bit easier to swallow.
