Can Kansas City repeat Wednesday’s goal fest?
The Current scored five goals on Wednesday evening without Temwa Chawinga and Michelle Cooper. Perhaps it’s what Kansas City needed to do, make up for that 1-0 loss in Boston and for players to be clinical and not miss their chances. Debinha and Haley Hopkins scored a brace each and Amelia White scored her first career NWSL regular season goal. Mind you, it was against Racing Louisville, who are trending to have one of their worst seasons yet. Still, the Current extended its unbeaten record at home for the season and remain one of two teams that are so far unbeaten at home this season (Portland Thorns are the other).
But up next is Angel City FC, a slightly better team than Racing Louisville and could present a real challenge to the Current’s home unbeaten streak and probably limit the Current from scoring five goals. Angel City is 3-2-1 away from home, with their most recent road win coming at San Diego, a 2-0 victory. The LA-based team has scored eight goals in their last five matches, and Ally Sentnor creating the most big chances for Angel City FC with four (FotMob.com). Kansas City and Angel City are tied in the all-time regular season series at 4-4-1. Their last meeting in May was for Angel City in a 2-1 win.
Kansas City is again without some of their big playmakers (see availability report below). But if the Current stick to attacking soccer and Haley Hopkins, Debinha, Amelia White, and Croix Bethune have another big game as they did on Wednesday, then the Current can earn their tenth win of the season, keeping them in the top six (or higher) as midseason continues.
AVAILABILITY REPORTÂ
OUT: Alana Cook (SEI-Knee), Clare Gagne (SEI-Head), Mary Long (D-45), Lorena da Silva Leite (Hip), Ellie Bravo-Young (Thigh), Michelle Cooper (Thigh), Kayla Sharples (Lower Leg), Laney Rouse (Knee)
INTERNATIONALÂ DUTY: Temwa Chawinga (Malawi)
Sharples AND Rouse are out too? Good Lord! Do we have return dates on any of these players? I asked Chad and he didn’t know – do we know anything about Clare Gagne, who has been out with a concussion for around a year?
No media were in attendance at the last availability on Friday. Usually, it is only me or Sperry that asks about injury status. I did push on Clare earlier in the week and got nothing other than she is working through the injury and getting better.
