KC Current draw Angel City 1-1; Unbeaten home record continues
The Kansas City Current continued its unbeaten streak at home this season after a 1-1 draw against Angel City at CPKC Stadium, wrapping up a three-game stretch in eight days. Kansas City also extended its active unbeaten home record to 26 consecutive regular-season matches without a loss (21-0-5).
The Current would again be without their usual attacking players (Cooper, injured; Chawinga at WAFCON), but Kansas City continued to pick up where they left off from Wednesday’s game plan to attack early. Amelia White, for the second straight game, settled in Cooper’s spot on the right, partnering with Croix Bethune for early momentum for the Current. But Angel City gained control of the match by the 10th minute, taking advantage of Kansas City’s slow defensive middle in the buildup.
In the 14th minute, Carina Lageyre played a ball to Taylor Suarez, who moved easily past Katie Scott for her first NWSL goal. Kansas City once again conceded first in the first 45 minutes, which has been one of the issues plaguing this season.

The Current would need to find a way to equalize and slow down Angel City’s attack. Debinha had a couple of opportunities in the 23rd minute, but one attempt was saved and the other blocked. But the Current’s attacking efforts paid off in the 26th minute as Izzy Rodriguez sent a ball to the middle of the box where Haley Hopkins sent it in for a goal with a left-footed volley.

Kansas City pressed for goal number two as Amelia White, Rocky Rodriguez, Debinha, and Hopkins all aimed for goal in the next 15 minutes. The Current ended the half with 8 shots, 4 on target and an xG of .80. Angel City, meanwhile, was limited to 3 shots, 1 on target, and an xG of .34.
The start of the second half slowed down for both teams. Neither side would have exciting chances until the 69th minute mark. Suarez headed the ball towards goal, but sent it over the goal. Kansas City’s chances came in the 76th minute as both Bethune and Lo’eua LaBonta took shots on goal. Bethune’s shot was saved by Angelina Anderson, and LaBonta sent her shot outside the net.
On the other end in the 82nd minute, Angel City missed an open-net scramble, but Ary Borges sent the ball wide, giving the Current a sigh of relief. In stoppage time, the Current nearly clinched the game-winner with a LaBonta shot outside the box that went wide. Both teams battled until the end for the draw, earning yellow cards along the way for unnecessary takedowns (Katie Scott taking down Ally Sentnor and Casey Phair’s foul to slow down Bethune as she headed towards goal).
Kansas City heads back on the road to face the Houston Dash next Saturday, August 8th. The match will kick off at 7:45pm CT.
