Lacho Loaned Out: Should the KC Current Make Another Signing?

The Kansas City Current have room to make more roster moves. Will they before the transfer deadline of August 25th?

The Kansas City Current are the best team in the NWSL (world?) but that doesn’t mean they can’t keep getting better. Despite an 11-point lead in the NWSL Shield race, General Manager Caitlin Carducci and Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski are hardly ones to sit on their hands. Heck, they just made the biggest trade in NWSL history acquiring Ally Sentnor three weeks ago.

Perhaps because of that Sentnor signing, the KC Current announced on Thursday they are loaning out attacker Flora Marta Lacho to their sister club in Denmark, HB Køge Women for the remainder of the 2025-26 season. Lacho had just joined the Current in March, ahead of the 2025 season. She’s on a two-year guaranteed contract through the end of 2026.

She’ll join HB Køge, who are currently in first place in the A-Liga in Denmark. They are the only perfect team two weeks into the season. That season runs through June of 2026. And the loan move makes sense. Lacho played well in the Teal Rising Cup, but when all the regular starters are available, she’s a bit buried on the depth chart. She appears to primarily be an attacking player, but in an effort to get her on the field for the Current, she played a little left back earlier in the season.

If her best positions are in attacking roles, it’s hard to break in when the starting four attackers are Bia, Temwa Chawinga, Michelle Cooper and Debinha. Even behind the starters, the depth is strong. Ally Sentnor is probably the first attacker off the bench, but the team has Nichelle Prince, Alex Pfeiffer, Mary Long and Haley Hopkins all available.

In Denmark, Lacho will get time on the field and the chance to be a star. If things really work out and she breaks through, the 26-year-old can return to the Current next season.

Lacho joins Mwanalima Adam Jereko at HB Køge on loan. Kansas City has also loaned out Katie Scott (Racing Louisville) and Fridah Mukoma (Beijing) for the 2025 season.

Room for More Moves?

With the announcement of the Lacho loan on the heels of the recent Scott loan, the KC Current have started to open up roster spots. The team has 30 players under contract, with four out on loan. That would fill the roster, but they also have Vanessa DiBernardo on maternity leave and Alana Cook and Gabby Robinson on the Season Ending Injury list.

The SEI designation is a little misleading though, as Robinson has been practicing for many weeks and is said to be nearing a return.

If you assume Robinson fills one of those spots, that leaves some flexibility to still add to this already stacked roster since Cook and DiBernardo won’t return until 2026 at the soonest.

There is the obvious caveat that we have no idea how much spending flexibility the Current have. The NWSL is a bit opaque when it comes to what players make, unlike MLS. With how deep the team is, you’d assume there isn’t a lot of money on the table.

Does This Roster Have Any Needs?

The NWSL secondary transfer window is open until August 25th. Looking around the Kansas City Current’s roster and it’s an embarrassment of riches. Most of the starters can make the case to be at or near Best XI quality in the entire NWSL.

If there is one area that’s a little thin, maybe it’s center back. But with the news that Elizabeth Ball’s injury isn’t serious and Robinson on the verge of returning, it doesn’t seem urgent. Hailie Mace filled in admirably and Kayla Sharples has developed into a star at left center back. Regan Steigleder can play there in a pinch too.

With the loan of Katie Scott to Louisville, fullback is a little bit thin, but has three players capable of starting in Mace, Ellie Wheeler and Izzy Rodriguez. Steigleder can also fill in and presumably the team could simply recall Scott from loan if they needed to.

Then what about defensive midfield? Lo LaBonta and Claire Hutton are locked in starters and Rocky Rodriguez is a great option off the bench. Deeper down, Bailey Fiest has lined up there at times, so it’s not really a trouble area either.

Goalkeeper is fine with Lorena holding down the starting job and Laurel Ivory stepping in during the Teal Rising Cup and when Lorena was away with Brazil for Copa America.

And the attack was already addressed above, it’s very deep.

So, while the Current could make a signing, there is no obvious position of need. Sentnor seemingly fell into their lap. Perhaps something like that happens again. Or maybe Kansas City just stand pat.

No matter what happens, KC seem set up to make a run at both the Shield and the NWSL Championship this fall.

I still think to win it all we need an elite center back to pair with Sharples. Ball (injury update?) and Mace have done the job so far but even when Robinson is healthy, I’m not sure it’s a championship pairing for this season. My dream would be to acquire Sam Staab from Chicago, she is elite defensively and brings something different with her long throw-in’s. She is the Stars anchor so it would take a lot to make that move happen though. I’d give up Prince and Stegler for her, but since they already have an open spot they probably aren’t planning on moving players at this point.

Solid roster analysis, Chad! I’d agree that the team is a bit thin at CB, but with Robinson coming off the SEI list today and Ball potentially fit enough to go this weekend, it’s not a major concern. Plus, they have several of the defenders signed through 2027 or 2028 (with the Robinson announcement today).
Honestly, I was a bit disappointed to hear about the Lacho loan. I have been pleased with what I’ve seen from her this season. She feels a little like she’s in the Chawinga mold, pacy and physical and willing to hustle all over the field. I can understand wanting to get her more minutes than what she’d likely see in KC the rest of this season, especially, as you said, with the addition of Sentnor. But still, unless the team makes another splash move in the next few days, I don’t think this squad is stronger without her.

That’s a good point. Lacho wasn’t a starter but she proved when she got in games she can provide a spark, as well as having some positional flexibility. So KCC making a move is the only logical reason.
