The ups and downs of the last day of the transfer window in Major League Soccer for Sporting Kansas City.
Sporting Kansas City entered Major League Soccer’s transfer deadline day with a lot of work to do and very little time to do it in. The transfer window closes at 1:00AM EST (midnight CST). The moves don’t have to be announced by then, but the paperwork has to be in.
Coming into the transfer window, there were some very high hopes. There were rumors of $20 million+ transfer fees and talks of a $50 to 60 million window. Notably for Andre Luiz (who has arrived) and Yann Gboho. The also got the Owen Wolff transfer across the line.
There was also that Mo Salah rumor and smaller rumors for guys like the Swedish striker Paulos Abraham. There was a record offer for Nico Fernandez Mercau to be purchased from NYCFC. Salah went to Turkiye. Gboho is still in play. And Abraham sounds like a dead deal since Hammarby couldn’t replace him in time.
The other side of the whole equation were all the outgoing moves. Dejan Joveljic was stunningly transferred in conference to the Seattle Sounders and Manu Garcia had his deal mutually terminated so he could return to Aris in Greece. In smaller moves, Cielo Tschantret and Ethan Bartlow went out on loan.

4:19AM – French outlet, Les Violets says that Yann Gboho will not play tonight for Toulouse and “a move to Kansas City is imminent.” They also add that MLS wasn’t his preferred destination, but it backed up reporting from yesterday a deal had been reached between the two clubs and the player on personal terms.
7:42AM – KCSJ’s Mike Kuhn out sleuthing early. Yesterday, it looked like Lyon were going to jump in and ruin the Yann Gboho deal. Early reporting was they used up their “Joker rule” signing on Nakamura and couldn’t sign Gboho.
Later in the day Santi Aouna, the journalist who had been reporting on Gboho, replied to Mike seemingly confirming that news.

7:45AM – Sporting Kansas City’s majority owner, Peter Mallouk, gives a little hope, saying that he’s “doing all I can as fast as we can.”
8:42AM – Yann Gboho “is now expected to head to the United States to join Sporting Kansas City, a club reportedly offering between €16 million and €17 million for his services.”
Les Violets, which might be the Toulouse KC Soccer Journal, keep reporting positive news but no one else is chiming in.
9:02AM – Sporting KC’s rivals make another move. They add midfielder Charles-Emile Brunet on loan for the rest of the year from Nashville SC. Look at those glorious locks!
9:48AM – Mike’s digging continues. Lyon are out on Yann Gboho according to French journalist, Hugo Guillemet.
10:44AM – Another source that Lyon are out because they used their “Joker” signing on Keito Nakamura.
~Noon-ish – Gboho deal off?
Tom Bogert out here breaking Kansas City fan’s hearts on a live Soccerwise podcast. Bogert said, “I keep on checking in on it and of course things can move but the last I heard as of an hour ago, Yann Gboho, that deal’s not on.”
Not on?!?! Dispair!
2:29PM – St. Louis announce the Damion Downs deal. That’s three transfers in the last few days, including a club record deal for Colorado Rapids striker Rapha Navarro.
2:48PM – Doom spiral. With Folarin Balogun nixing his deal with Chelsea yesterday, people started (jokingly) asking if Sporting KC should sign him.
3:30PM – We’ve shifted our focus to the NBA. Record fines for Steve Ballmer and the LA Clippers for the Kawhi Leonard cap circumvention scheme. Should the KC Soccer Journal just be an NBA site? It would help if Kansas City had a team. And “soccer” wasn’t in our site title.
7:31PM – A Bogert tweet?!?! Just kidding, he’s just twisting that knife. St. Louis City confirmed their third official signing of the day for Rapha Navarro. Record cash transfer in MLS. Most they’ve ever spent on a player. He’s quite good.
8:50PM – We’re to the joke part of the evening. Joss, from Off to See the Wizards, with a good little joke about Dejan Joveljic.
9:12PM – And then there was silence. No rumors. Nothing. It’s the middle of the night in Europe. If Kansas City were getting any moves done, no one was awake to notice. The main Kansas City based reported, Daniel Sperry of the KC Star, locked in with his Arby’s to wait through the silence.
12:00AM – The MLS transfer window is officially closed. Sporting KC have no rumors or announcements, BUT as long as they got paperwork in, they can announce later.
9/3/2026 – Sporting KC got two loan deals done within the window. Read more about Ruben Ramos Jr. and Seymour Reid.
9/4/2026 – Yann Gboho signs with Coventry City in the Premier League. Now we know why Sporting KC couldn’t close that deal. A young guy in his prime wanted to stay in Europe and go to the biggest league in the world.

No news yet does not mean no news.I expect a late move that we will hear about on Thursday.
100% we won’t hear anything tonight. Maybe something leaks out tomorrow, but KC just has to have their paperwork in in the next 36 minutes for it to count.
This is an abject failure for Lee. He had a war chest. He had a fan base begging for a signing after selling Manu and Deki. He didn’t get ANYTHING?!
we need a CF, a 10, and a right back. Bare minimum. Failing to get any of those is serious egg on his face and frankly, raises questions.
Ive been willing to forgive a lot since it’s a completely new ownership and FO. But this is his 2nd transfer window and it was kind of a giant wet fart.
I do wonder whether the open wallet led him to (understandably) focus on aiming high, but also (less forgivably) not make backup plans. It’s fair to consider that you can’t always hold multiple signings in limbo while waiting for a last-minute big one, but if there really isn’t more news, it still doesn’t look good to dump Jovelic without being certain you’ve got a replacement, or to not have anything in the wings. For example, St Louis fans were up in arms about Hartel and Löwen, but CITY really did come through with other signings (not to mention they’re actually playing well without those guys, beloved though they may have been).
At this point it sure seems clear that nothing else happened; if they’d file the paperwork in time on anything, you’d sure think they’d be trumpeting it by now.
Late last night I started chatting with Copilot about SKC. I asked it to take the roster as it was last night and compare the predicted starting 11 to the rest of MLS and rank the SKC starters in the league. Only 3 players were above the bottom 5 in position in the league (Karic, Mosquera and Luiz).
This roster has larger holes now than it did prior to the summer window. I don’t think this team has a player that can finish. I don’t think this team has a player that can create. We know this team doesn’t have a midfield that links offense to defense. So, they fixed nothing and created new problems.
Hope abounded in this transfer window…SKC could even figure out how to reward supporters hope when they had multiple weeks to make it happen and a nearly unlimited budget. How hard would it be to take a photo of 5 million dollars in 100s sitting on a table and send that sucker to every single player that fits the need profile with the caption, “Come to SKC and this table along with everything on it is yours.”?
Eh. I’m not sure I 100% agree. I do think our back line is better than it was at the start of the year. I’m still not sure about Hloriaj but Karic and Mosquera have quality.
i never really rated Manu. He was our most creative player but he wasn’t that creative. He was only sort of ok compared to
his peers.
i like the Wolff signing. I think he’s going to help link the defense to the “offense”.
im pretty pissed but maybe Lee can turn it around in the winter window
