Preview

It’s finally here. The final game of the 2026 season. Sporting KC travel to the West Coast to visit San Diego FC in a battle of Western Conference teams that have been eliminated before Decision Day.

For Kansas City, there is still a non-zero chance that they can stave off the Wooden Spoon, so the club still has something to play for on Saturday. They will need a win at Snapdragon Stadium, as well as a CF Montreal loss against Western Conference No. 1-seed Vancouver Whitecaps. That game will conclude before SKC have a shot, so they’ll know what they are playing for.

With the stage set for Rapha Wicky’s men, they are coming off a 1-1 draw in their regular season home finale against FC Dallas that ended in dramatic fashion. There were moments in that match where SKC looked like the better team and felt like they would be able to walk away with three points.

However, it wouldn’t be a 2026 SKC match without a costly defensive mistake to end a close game. In the fourth minute of added time (after the head referee had originally announced three minutes), Jansen Miller, the author of Sporting’s goal earlier in the match, was called for a handball in his own area, conceding a penalty kick and bringing Petar Musa to the spot to face Stefan Cleveland.

Cleveland put on his best Tim Melia impression and swatted Musa’s strike away for a corner, and ultimately salvaging the draw for the home side.

The draw put an end to a four-game losing streak where SKC allowed 12 goals and only scored three.

San Diego on the other hand are coming off a huge upset win over St. Louis City. SDFC have performed way below their expectations for the season after their magical debut run in 2025.

Both Anders Dreyer and Marcus Ingvartsen have scored double digits for San Diego, helping the club to the top half of the league in that statistic. However defensively, their 62 allowed goals places them in the bottom third of the league.

Another point of positivity for SKC fans is that San Diego are a game above .500 at home (with five draws as well). Insert “So you’re saying there is a chance?” memes here. Unfortunately, Sporting has three wins and 13 losses on the road this season.

With all that being said, it is in fact Decision Day. And yes, maybe Sporting isn’t even close to sniffing the playoffs, but Saturday’s match is still a high-stakes affair that they shouldn’t take lightly.

Control what you can control and do whatever it takes to get the win, and hopefully, by the end of the match the Whitecaps have dispatched of Montreal and SKC leapfrogs out of the basement of the table.

It’s been five games since Andre Luiz has found the back of the net. Saturday would be a perfect time to get back on the score sheet and show that the future isn’t as dull as it seems.

When the final whistle blows, everyone can take a breath and work on preparing for the sprint season. Then, and only then, can SKC fandom emotionally transition into an offseason that feels like a turning point for this club.
