Wrapping up a season to forget
A Wooden Spoon would make it much tougher to forget.
This week on Shades of Blue, we’re discussing the final matchday of 2026 and whether or not it’s important Sporting KC avoid the Wooden Spoon.
Whether or not they deserve it, SKC somehow still have a chance to climb out of last place on Decision Day in MLS. It’s been a historically bad season and they sit at, or very near, the bottom of the league in seemingly every statistical category. For the fans, this has certainly felt like a Wooden Spoon season.
From our friends at FotMob, Sporting are in the bottom three of MLS in the following categories:
FotMob Rating – 30th
Goals per match – 28th
Expected goals – 29th
Big chances – 29th
Goals conceded per match – 30th
Average possession – 28th
Clean sheets – 30th
Accurate crosses per match – 29th
Penalties awarded – 28th
xG conceded – 28th
xG difference – 29th
Attendance – 28th
In spite of all that, there is still something to hope for this weekend. An SKC win, and a Montreal loss would put Montreal in last place.
It’s tough to admit how far the club has fallen and hoping to avoid the Wooden Spoon is a sad representation of that. But it is indeed the reality. Here we stand, with reason to hope for brighter days ahead. And it would be really nice to keep that badge of honor which says this Sporting Kansas City has never been the worst.
2026 has been a season to forget for this club… but it would be MUCH easier to forget without the Wooden Spoon title.
