All 2025 MLS Salaries and How Sporting KC Compare
The highest paid players, the highest paid teams, and the salary of every single player in Major League Soccer (MLS).
For the first time in 2025, the Major League Soccer Players Association (MLSPA) released salary information for its players. The bi-annual tradition brings the chance for fans and pundits to dig into the numbers and see who’s making too much (or too little) and which teams are spending a lot or not much at all.
It’s a big day of judgement if you are a Sporting Director, though for Sporting Kansas City many of these deals came before Mike Burns was in charge. Did you spend a ton of your owner’s money and have little to show for it? It’s also a day of awkwardness in locker rooms around the league as everyone suddenly sees if you are earning your keep.
Before getting into the new information, it can always be helpful to look at past salary data as a reference point for how to view this new information.

A Few Notes
Throughout the story, when referring to a number, I’m referring to a player’s guaranteed compensation. That number is often higher than their base salary because it includes pro-rated bonuses across the life of a contract.
Additionally, this is not the number that hits a team’s salary budget. That can be impacted by mechanisms like Designated Player status, the U-22 Initiative, TAM, GAM and transfer fees, which aren’t included here. Some teams lay out massive fees to acquire players. The salary numbers alone are an incomplete picture, but they add to the story.
Also, it should be noted that this data is through May 23, 2025. If players sign a new deal after that date, it won’t be reflected.
Highest Paid Players
To no one’s surprise, Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi is still the highest paid player in MLS coming in north of $20 million. Loreno Insigne is still dramatically overpaid by Toronto FC in second place at $15.4 million. It’s a decent drop off to Sergio Busquets in third place at almost $8.8 million. Miguel Almiron’s return to Atlanta United and MLS sees him in fourth at almost $7.9 million and new arrival Chucky Lozano rounds at the top five at just over $7.6 million as San Diego FC’s first signing.
No Sporting KC players land in the top 20 with Dejan Joveljic coming in highest on the list at 31st with about $3.3 million. 10 spots later Manu Garcia shows up around $2.3 million. It’s a bit of a gap to SKC’s third highest paid player, Erik Thommy, who is making $1.6 million. Inside the top 100 are two more Sporting KC players with Nemanja Radoja ($1.39m) at 82nd and Daniel Salloi ($1.3m) at 92nd.
An interesting tidbit is Gyasi Zardes comes in 99th at $1.2 million and he’s not even on a roster.

Millionaires
131 players in MLS are set to make over $1 million in guaranteed compensation in 2025. Messi leads the way with Brian White rounding out the list at an even $1m in 131st position. 131 is up from 115 millionaires at this point in 2024. That’s significant growth since 2021, when only 78 players cleared that mark.
Sporting KC have six millionaires based on 2025 salary alone. Dejan Joveljic, Manu Garcia, Erik Thommy, Nemanja Radoja and Joaquin Fernandez all cleared at least $1m in guaranteed compensation.
The average pay in the league made another nice jump. In 2025 the average is $649,199. In 2024 the average was just $594,390. That’s a 9.2% jump. The year before? $530,262.
Average isn’t always the best way to look at these figures since the Messi and Insigne numbers skew everything. The median pay, what the dead middle player in the league makes, is now $339,786, which is up from $308,750. That’s a ten percent jump, a raise I’d gladly take each year.
Positional Notes
The vast majority of the league’s highest paid players are attackers, but that isn’t always true. The exception to the rule is Jordi Alba who is the 8th highest paid player making $6 million a year. It’s a huge drop off from there.
Walker Zimmerman is the league’s second highest paid defensemen at $3.46 million for Nashville SC. He lands at 28th in the league. Thiago Martins is up next much further down the list at 48th making $2.16m. The first goalkeeper and the league’s only Designated Player between the posts is St. Louis City’s Roman Burki landing at 56th making just over $1.7 million. That means he’s a DP in name only, as he could theoretically be bought down with Targeted Allocation Money.
FC Cincinnati has a pair of high paid center backs in Miles Robinson (61st) and Matt Miazga (66th). The first non-center back is former LA Galaxy midfielder and current Nashville defensive midfielder Gaston Brugman. He’s making $1.41 million and landed at 78th in the whole league. He only slightly beat the aforementioned Nemanja Radoja (82nd).
To find a non-Jordi Alba fullback you have to go all the way down to Toronto FC’s Richie Laryea who is making $1.17 million as the league’s highest paid right back. Stunningly, Tim Leibold of Sporting is the league’s fourth highest paid left back and sixth highest paid fullback, despite mostly being a backup. He comes in at 145th in the league making $926,050. Of course, that is based on the designation the MLSPA gives the players. Khiry Shelton is still listed as a center forward and is the 196th highest paid player in the league making $775,000, despite playing all his minutes at right back this season.
Other Sporting KC Connections
After the 2024 season, Sporting Kansas City decided to move on from Johnny Russell. Last year, he made a cool $1 million. This year, perhaps because he was unsigned a bit into the season, he has taken a significant pay cut. Real Salt Lake are only paying him $325,000.
Another former SKC player, Ilie Sanchez is on his second team since leaving Sporting. After making $1.267m in 2024 with LAFC, he’s making $600,000 as the captain of Austin FC.
William Agada is still on the same contract he had with SKC since he was traded this year. His $546,875 is significantly less than Dejan Joveljic’s pay, but Joveljic is really more of a Pulido replacement. Agada makes more than both backup strikers on Sporting KC this year in Mason Toye ($392,500) and Santiago Munoz ($335,026).
The only other former Sporting KC players still in the league with a known salary is Diego Rubio at $208,000. It’s hard to believe he’s been off the team since 2018. Kei Kamara is still in the league but signed after the cut off for this release, so we don’t know his wages.
Salary By Team
While this section covers guaranteed compensation by team, that doesn’t tell the full story of roster spending. No transfer fees are included in these numbers and some teams shelled out record fees this past offseason (Atlanta United and FC Cincinnati to name a few). But it’s still a glimpse at a team’s ambition. Sporting KC are rumored to have spent $9 million in transfer fees this past offseason, but their salaries still come in around the middle of the league.
With three of the league’s eight highest paid players, Inter Miami CF are by far the league’s highest payroll. The only other team in the top five above the playoff line is FC Cincinnati (4th). They are joined by Toronto FC (2nd), Atlanta United (3rd) and the defending MLS Cup Champion LA Galaxy (5th) who are all below the playoff line as of this writing. At the other end of the spectrum is CF Montreal who has the league’s lowest payroll at just under $12 million.
