The Kansas City Current made another signing as they prepare for next season. The Current signed Brazilian National Team goalkeeper Lorena da Silva Leite, or Lorena as she goes by, to a three-year contract through 2027 with an option for 2028. Lorena transferred to Kansas City from Brazilian club Grêmio for an undisclosed fee.

“I’m very happy and excited to defend Kansas City’s colors,” said Lorena via press release. “I’m sure we’ll write a beautiful story with the Current’s supporters.”

Lorena has shown herself to be a tremendous keeper against the best talent. She missed the World Cup because of injury but was a standout star at the 2024 Olympics. Lorena’s play helped Brazil advance to the final, where she faced a vaunted United States attack. Brazil only gave up one goal but could not break through the U.S. defense, still winning the Silver Medal.

“Lorena has proven herself at the highest levels as one of the best goalkeepers in the world,” said sporting director and head coach Vlatko Andonovski via press release. “We believe she will make our goalkeeper unit stronger and we are very excited to bring her to Kansas City.”

“We want to bring in the best talent to create a culture of consistent competition and we expect Lorena to be the anchor of our defense,” general manager Caitlin Carducci added in the press release. “Lorena has been a standout against the best competition in the world and we look forward to how she can contribute and continue to elevate our club.”

This is the third signing over the last few days.

Brazilian connections in place

The 27-year-old joins two fellow Brazilians already on the roster. Bia and Debinha are clearly known for their attacking talent and singular monikers as well. Having a keeper  that they already know, who is good with her feet, and distribution can only help them and the rest of the Current in quick transition attacks.

Rebuilding the Keeper Room

The Current didn’t have a keeper on the roster after the 2024 end-of-season moves. They had hoped to bring Almuth Schult back but when that did not pan out they looked around the league and internationally. First, they added Laurel Ivory from Seattle. A good keeper who had some excellent performances for a bad team. Now with Lorena they have added what appears to be their long-term keeper to the roster. Lorena was signed for three years with an option for 2028, giving the Current stability in goal.
