Home Finale Under the Shadow of Record Infamy
Sporting Kansas City returns to Sporting Park on Saturday afternoon for their final home game of 2026, welcoming an FC Dallas squad firmly positioned near the top of the Western Conference. What was already a grueling campaign turned historic on Wednesday night in Minnesota, as Kansas City conceded three second-half goals in a 3-1 loss to Minnesota United.
That result pushed Sporting KC to 80 goals allowed on the year, officially surpassing the previous Major League Soccer single-season mark of 78 set by the San Jose Earthquakes in 2024. Remarkably, current playoff teams Orlando City (74) and FC Cincinnati (73) could reach the old mark of 78 depending how their final two matchdays go. By then, who knows how many goals SKC will have conceded.
With unwanted league history now cemented, Raphael Wicky’s side has only pride and the Wooden Spoon escape hatch left to play for. Kansas City remains three points behind CF Montreal in the overall table with two games remaining. Because total wins serve as the first tiebreaker, taking maximum points on Saturday is mandatory if Sporting KC wants any opportunity to hand off last place before their Decision Day trip to San Diego. Montreal has the same record as SKC in their last five league games, 0-4-1, constantly leaving openings for Kansas City to escape last place.
FC Dallas arrives in Kansas City looking to quickly rebound from a 2-0 midweek home defeat against the Columbus Crew. That loss snapped a 168-day home unbeaten run for Eric Quill’s side, but Dallas remains locked in second place in the West with 54 points and looks likely to secure home-field advantage for the opening round of the postseason.

Matchup Trends & Storylines
-
High-Scoring September Thriller: The previous meeting between these two clubs on September 5 in Frisco turned into a wild seven-goal track meet, with Dallas prevailing 4-3 after a late penalty from Petar Musa erased an earlier 2-0 Sporting KC lead.
-
Musa Chasing the Golden Boot: Petar Musa sits second in MLS with 22 regular-season goals, trailing only Lionel Messi (25). Facing a Kansas City defense that has conceded at least two goals in five straight matches, Musa will see Saturday as his best chance to close the gap.

Home Finale Record Against Dallas: While Kansas City has dropped three straight meetings against FC Dallas in all competitions, their long-term home record against the Texas side remains formidable, having taken three wins and a draw across their last five home encounters at Sporting Park. You may recall the thrilling 2024 US Open Cup battle that had a massive weather delay or the game three days prior in regular season play where Zorhan Bassong was sent off after a flop from Paul Arriola.
-
Contrasting Halves in Minnesota: Taylor Calheira notched his fifth goal of the year to hand Sporting KC a 1-0 halftime lead on Wednesday, but the defense collapsed over a 16-minute span late in the second half, highlighting ongoing game-management issues. When asked about the choices he’s made, head coach Rapha Wicky insisted it was not his tactics.
Player Availability & Lineup Notes
Sporting KC continues to battle significant roster attrition heading into their third match in seven days. Bassong was held out of Wednesday’s matchday roster with a hamstring concern, joining Lasse Berg Johnsen on the sidelines. Center backs Or Blorian, Diego Borges, and Moises Mosquera remain out, forcing Jansen Miller and Wyatt Meyer to carry heavy minutes in central defense.
Jake Davis captained the side at right back against Minnesota before departing near the hour mark to manage workloads, while Owen Wolff made a second-half appearance off the bench and could be in line to start. Andre Luiz will look to bounce back from a quieter night (for him) in Saint Paul and lead the attack alongside Calheira and Capita, who is also working back from an injury and has been on a minutes restriction.
Kwaku Agyabeng took a hard challenge in the lost to Minnesota United, but he managed to finish out the match and play all 90 minutes. If he’s added to the injury report later today, there is almost no one left to play in the midfield.
FC Dallas head coach Eric Quill welcomed back winger Anderson Julio on Wednesday, who made his first competitive appearance since early August after recovering from injury. Winger Bernard Kamungo and midfielder Santiago Moreno provide constant vertical service into Musa, while former San Jose goalkeeper Daniel anchors a backline that has posted four shutouts over its last seven matches.
Sporting KC are still chasing their first shutout against a team playing with all 11 men. They only have one in 32 tries and that was against a Houston Dynamo side that picked up a first half red card.

Tactical Matchup Keys
Containing Musa inside the penalty box represents Kansas City’s most demanding defensive assignment of the afternoon. Musa has scored in bunches throughout October, utilizing his size to bully center backs on set pieces and low crosses. Miller and Meyer cannot afford to get caught ball-watching when Dallas cycles possession to the flanks for early cutbacks.
Re-establishing Andre Luiz on the right wing remains Kansas City’s primary opportunity to unlock opposing defenses. The biggest thing for Andre, may be looking for a pass. While he’s already earned three assists, he has such gravity that he will draw multiple defenders. Finding a pass, could really open up the SKC attack and even end with a give and go and a cleaner look for himself. If Dallas left back Nolan Norris can pin Andre Luiz in his own defensive half, Sporting KC will struggle to maintain sustained pressure. If Andre chooses to defend, that is.
Midfield control will dictate whether this contest turns into another transition-heavy shootout. With Berg Johnsen and Bassong managing injuries, Jacob Bartlett and Agyabeng must be disciplined in cutting off central passing lanes into Moreno. Allowing Dallas to break lines uncontested will leave Kansas City’s stretched backline exposed to repeated odd-man rushes.
Wicky criticized Bartlett after Wednesday’s loss saying, “there’s no need to run away,” referring to the miscommunication between him and Wolff that led to the game winning goal for MNUFC. Wicky continued, “It’s the execution which is not right. Jacob knows. We spoke. He has to learn from that. You’re a number six. You have to support, not run away. He runs away and we open up the whole center.” With all the injuries, Bartlett may be forced into the Starting XI again.
Prediction
Sporting KC has regularly created scoring chances at Sporting Park and should find a breakthrough against a Dallas side that showed defensive vulnerabilities against Columbus. However, Kansas City’s defensive fragility and heavy minutes over the past week make slowing down Musa a daunting challenge. Dallas possesses too much firepower in transition and should pull away in the final 30 minutes to close out Sporting Park’s 2026 home slate.
Then again, you just don’t know with this team. If Montreal continue to leave the door open for Sporting KC to climb out of the basement, maybe they’ll just do it. It is the hope that kills you. Making a positive prediction on the back of four straight losses feels foolhardy though.
FC Dallas 3-1 Win
Good commentary. My family and I will be at the match on Saturday if we do other reason than the candy for the kids. I expect to see a sporting Kansas City team that is going through the motions and just praying the last 180 minutes clocks off quickly. Last Saturday I saw a team that was dejected and I expect to see a team ever Betty dejected on Saturday I get voted down for it constantly, but use AI and a little fact checking and you’ll see that KZ had a better year. I don’t think there’s much of anything that is memorable other than the final whistle next week. I’m not buying season tickets for this shit anymore. Sometimes you just have to wake up and realize that your team sucks and doesn’t deserve your money.
