The Kansas City Current has signed talented local defender, Meila Brewer. The Current signed Brewer to a three-year contract through the 2028 season. Brewer is just 16 years old and will be one of the youngest players in the National Women’s Soccer League.

“Meila is a rising star,” said general manager Ryan Dell via press release. “She is familiar with our organization and has had the opportunity to train alongside some of the top talent in the world in our competitive environment. She has risen to each occasion, and her time at UCLA combined with her international experience at the youth level is incredibly valuable. We’re excited to welcome her back to Kansas City.”

Brewer is already familiar with the Kansas City Current organization. She has spent time training with the Current as well as with Kansas City Current II and has already made an appearance with the Current during the Teal Rising Cup.

“I’m super excited to take this next step with the KC Current,” said Brewer. “I’m grateful for the doors God continues to open. Coming back home means a lot to me, and I’m looking forward to learning, competing and contributing however I can to help the club continue to grow and succeed.”

The Overland Park, Kan. native has made a number of appearances with U.S. Youth National Teams, including the Under-15, U-16 and U-17 levels. Brewer was part of the squad that won the 2024 Concacaf U-15 Championship title. Brewer also helped the U.S. U-17 squad win the 4 Nations Tournament in 2025. Brewer also started all four matches and scored a goal at the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Brewer reclassified to the Class of 2025 from 2027 in order to attend the University of California, Los Angeles for the 2025 season. In between national team callups, she started eight of the nine matches she appeared in while going the full 90 minutes in four matches.

Brewer is the latest in a group of defensive signings for the Current, giving the Shield-winning side more depth on the back line. Kansas City lost versatile defender/attacker Halie Mace to free agency after the season but has added Brewer, Laney Rouse and Kolo Suliafu in the last few days. Brewer is a natural centerback, Rouse can play either outside back position, and Suliafu will be seen as a right back and centerback.
