Sporting Kansas City are back at home on Saturday after short away stints to the completely opposite sides of the US. And while Colorado Rapids seem to be the favorite, there is still some reasonable hope for KC. The last time these two met Sporting KC took home all three points to stun the Rapids and win in Colorado for the first time since 2014!

SKC are (mostly) healthy… but is it too late?

Sporting KC have been fighting an injury bug, notably last week’s injury report being the longest with four players out with injury and two out on paternity leave (Congrats Memo and Alan). While deep, it’s felt like an eternity since having a player who can play the 10, yet somehow, it’s only been two games since we saw Manu Garcia for 26 minutes. Sporting KC played their best portion of the match against San Diego when he came on. Also, missing bigtime in the midfield has been Erik Thommy, who has been out with a hip injury since July 4th, when he scored the game winning goal in Colorado, resetting SKC’s winless history in Commerce City.

With playoff hopes getting further from SKC’s grasp, it is only a matter of time until the official elimination, so what can SKC do to close out the season? We’ve seen what each player can do on the field except one, Alan Montes, who has seen 13 minutes of play so far. He will need significant minutes in the last seven matches of the season to determine if he will be bought after the loan period. Additionally, there are 17 players either out of contract or with an option to pick up, players (and coaches) will be playing for their future.

Transfers for Colorado Rapids

The Colorado Rapids took full advantage of the summer window, transferring five players out and bringing five players in, most notably Paxten Aaronson. While the lesser of the famous Aaronson brothers, Paxten has gotten his call up to the USMNT for the Olympics, scoring twice in the tournament. And with his stint in Europe, the move makes him a Designated Player for the Rapids. However, with one DP in, one must go out. Sporting fans should be happy that Djordje Mihailovic, a player who has had 39 contributions in less than two MLS seasons, was bought by Eastern Conference foes Toronto FC.

The Rapids are looking to bounce back after a 3-0 loss against the LA Galaxy, sitting in 7th in the Western Conference with 36 points.

Sporting KC is 13th in the Western Conference with 24 points.

Favorite SKC memory: Witnessing Erik Thommy's goal in LA during the 2024 U.S. Open Cup. There was hope, there was joy, and I may have cried. Favorite KC Current memory: Getting to enjoy opening day of CPKC stadium with my dad, who bought us season tickets to FCKC in their Swope Park days
