The Kansas City Current announced they have sent defender Lauren to Atlético de Madrid via a free transfer. The Current retains a portion of future transfer fees for Lauren.

“We’ve talked a lot about as an organization, we want to grow, we want to get better,” Current head coach Vlatko Andonovski explained. “We want to do things right. We want to do things right for this team, but we also want to do things right for individual players. Doing right is allowing Lauren to be in an environment where she can she can thrive and develop and get better. She believes that the situation with Atlético Madrid  is going to be better for her. I think it’s a great team, a great organization, and it’s opportunity for her to get better. We just wanted to support that and not stand in her way.”

Despite being a talented defender, Lauren has struggled to find significant minutes on a deep Current squad. As a Brazilian International, she has been more successful. Initially, she was signed last summer for Kansas City but made her debut after the 2023 FIFA World Cup in Australia. She played a pair of matches for Brazil there before coming to Kansas City.

Lauren played for Brazil at the recent Olympics in Paris as well. She appeared in five matches and earned a silver medal after being defeated in the gold medal match against the United States.

Lauren leaves the Current after making just five appearances and two starts. She was the 16th different player to score a goal for the Current in 2024.

The Current have three healthy center backs on the roster, Elizabeth Ball, Stine Ballisager, and Alana Cook. Gabrielle Robinson is on the Season Ending Injury list. A couple other players can step into that role like Hailie Mace and Regan Steigleder when needed.
