USWNT draws second World Cup match – podcast

Huw Williams joins Thad Bell from the Kansas City Soccer Journal to review the US Women’s National team’s draw with the Netherlands at the 2023 World Cup. After a 3-0 win versus Vietnam in the first match of the group stage, Vlatko Andonovski’s team played to a 1-1 draw. For some, it was a disappointing result in the rematch of the 2019 final. The Oranje Leeuwinnen are a very good team and very badly wanted to get revenge.

The US did not have a good first half but they were definitely better in the second half. Was it the lone sub (yes we discuss that), a change in tactics (a bit) or the US getting mad? The US came out more motivated but when it comes to anger, captain Lindsey Horan took the lead. There was definitely a little anger between Horan and her Lyon teammate Daniëlle van de Donk after Horan was fouled.

A major point of discussion around the world was that Andonovski went with the same lineup from the Vietnam game, and then only used one sub. We discuss possible alternatives.

The US is coached by Kansas City resident Vlatko Andonovski. Williams and Andonovski worked together in the NWSL and in local soccer.

The US defense collapsed but the initial shot was blocked by defender Crystal Dunn. USA – Lindsey Horan (Rose Lavelle) 62nd minute: Lavelle’s corner kick swerved in towards the near post. A very determined and focused Horan made her run to get a margin of separation from the defender, then snapped a header in the net. USA 1, NED 1
