KC Current
KC Current defeat Pachuca 3-0 in Summer Cup Play
Tha Kansas City Current hosted CF Pachuca from Liga MX Femenil in their second game of the Summer Cup tournament between the NWSL and the Mexican women’s league. With a 3-1 win vs. the Houston Dash last Saturday, the Current stood at second place in Group C behind Tigres UANL. This would be the first time the Current faced an unfamiliar opponent and against a three-time runner up in the Liga MX Femenil.
Starting XIÂ
The big storyline coming into this game was the players unavailable for Kansas City for this game: Elizabeth Ball, Temwa Chawinga, and Izzy Rodriguez, all who suffered injuries recently. But we saw a couple of firsts in the starting XI with the debut of Hanna Glas and the first start of 2024 for Kristen Hamilton.

The Current also signed midfield Allie Long to an Injury Replacement Contract, the club announced on Saturday afternoon. Long has three NWSL championships, two with the  Portland Thorns and one with Gotham FC, scoring 36 career goals and recording 16 assists. She subbed in the 77th minute for Ellie Wheeler.
First half things: No Temwa Chawinga? No problem!
No doubt that Temwa Chawinga is a big reason for the Current’s success in 2024. She’s leading the NWSL Golden Boot race and scores  in basically every game, so her absence would be felt in this game, at least I thought that her absence could impact the Kansas City attack. But the Current still have big-time goalscorers, like Debinha and Hamilton, and both reminded us in the first half why they are the goalscorers that they are.
For example:
Goal #1 – Debinha, 12th minute. After a corner kick, the Current were on the attack, and pass from Glas to Debinha, who was right outside the box, sent a rocket towards the goal.

Goal #2 – Debinha again, 28th minute. The sweetest volley you’ll ever did see. Assisted by Hamilton.
DEBINHA. AGAIN.

Goal #3 – Hamilton, 32nd minute. A long pass to Cooper who found Hamilton near the post as she was pretty wide open.

It was all Kansas City in the first half. Pachuca found themselves on the defense and struggled to record a shot on goal. The Current, on the other hand, 13 shots, 6 on target, and led possession 58% to 42%.
Second half things: A bit more Pachuca attack
After spending the first half defending and lacking in the attack, Pachuca saw a bit more chances in the second half, but they remained without scoring a goal, and the scoreline remained 3-0 for another win for the Kansas City Current, taking the top spot in group C, at least until Tigres UANL plays the Houston Dash on Sunday.
The Current will face Tigers on Thursday, and it will help to determine whether Kansas City advances to the semifinal round, which will be played August 6 at CPKC Stadium.
