With Free Agency Open, the KC Current Have Key Unsigned Players

Fan favorites Lo LaBonta, Bia, Hailie Mace and many others are already “free agents” according to new NWSL rules.

This past Tuesday, July 1st, free agency opened in the National Women’s Soccer League. That is probably a little jarring to hear considering that the NWSL is only at the half-way point of the 2025 season. The NWSL Championship game is still nearly five months away on November 22nd.

While players who are out of contract after 2025 are free to start negotiating with other clubs, they won’t move until the season is over.

That’s good news for the first place Kansas City Current who have 12 players on their roster who are eligible to start negotiating with other teams. A week ago, that list was at 14 players before the Current got a good bit of business done inking contract extensions with Michelle Cooper and Izzy Rodriguez to keep them on the squad through 2028.

However, there are five other players who are currently starters who are free to sign contracts elsewhere. Choosing a headliner free agent among this list is tough but take your pick. Team captain and Celly Queen Lo LaBonta is out of contract. Star striker Bia Zaneratto is as well. Sometimes USWNT right back Hailie Mace is on the list. And both current starting center backs, Kayla Sharples and Elizabeth Ball join them as well.

That leaves out all three rookies the team signed this past offseason: Katie Scott, Mary Long and Clare Gagne. Not to mention backup goalkeeper Laurel Ivory and many other key role-players like Bayley Feist. There is a lot of talent that may not be on the team next year.

It’s the nature of sports. Brace yourself KC Current fans.

Stars Available Around the NWSL

The KC Current aren’t the only ones dealing with this, it’s a league wide rule change around the most recently negotiated Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). If you take a look at the full list of free agents, there are some stunning names on the list.

Some of them may end up on other NWSL teams and some of them may look to head overseas to join some of the European super clubs. An editorial on the NWSL website has LaBonta and Bia mixed into their top five with Sophia Wilson, Trinity Rodman and Midge Purce.

Can you imagine if any of those players moved to another NWSL side? Can you imagine if they moved to the Current? They do have the only women’s specific stadium and one of the best ownership groups in the league. It’s wild times in the National Women’s Soccer League.

Full KC Current Roster

If you want a closer look at every player on the KC Current and their contract situations, we’ve got you covered. As a reminder, all options in the NWSL are mutual. Both the player and the team have to trigger the option for them to remain on the team in the option year.

Playing GM, and not worrying about length and terms of contract at this point, LaBonta, Mace, Bia and Sharples are no brainer extensions. Probably the two kids too, one being the owner’s daughter and needing some more time to see what they can do. The rest are likely replacement level, although Ball has meant a lot to the team. That depends on Robinson’s health and Cook’s return timeline.
