Back at CPKC Stadium, the KC Current hosted the Houston Dash in the second meeting of the season between the two teams. The last meeting resulted in a 1-1 draw after a near four-hour game delay in Houston on May 4. A win or draw for the Current would set the all-time unbeaten streak NWSL record. Coming into the game, Kansas City was at 16 games unbeaten, dating back to the end of 2023, which has already tied the NWSL record set by Seattle Reign in 2014.

The Starting XI

This now appears to be Vlatko Andonovski’s set starting XI, going with a 4-2-3-1 with Bia Zaneretto in the number 9. No Vanessa DiBenardo for the second week as she recovers from a head injury.

First half: No goals but surely entertaining

Kansas City did what they usually do: attack, attack, attack, and it was working with 17-2 total shots, but on target only 6 compared to Houston’s one on goal. It was the decision-making in the box that resulted in no goals. Temwa Chawinga often was the player on the attack, but her shots were wide or right to goalkeeper Jane Campbell. The Current also just quite could not make the final touch or pass needed to finish, and so went into halftime scoreless.

There was a sweet moment in the 26th moment as Chawinga became the first player at CPKC Stadium to send a ball into the river as she rocketed her shot attempt.

Second half: It was the Temwa Chawinga Show

The Current came out attacking once again to finally take the lead. It took 77 minutes and Temwa Chawinga and scoring goals in a two-minute span, but the Kansas City Current, after dominating so much of the game, were able to get on the board. Twice.

We present to you Exhibit A & B.

And with the brace, Chawinga becomes, at least momentarily the leading scorer in the NWSL and also sets a single-season club record for scoring. It is also her third brace of the season.

With the win, the Kansas City Current remain unbeaten, breaking the 10-year old record for most games without a loss, which is now set at 17 games.

Even though it was disallowed, I feel like the Pfeiffer “goal” maybe unlocked something for KC. Seeing her blast hit the back of the net was proof that Campbell could be beaten. It wasn’t that long afterwards that Chawinga netted her brace.

Any update of Pfeiffer’s injury. Was worried when she went down without contact. Then she carried on. Then got taken off. Haven’t see any word.

The thing about Chawinga is that she isn’t that great of a finisher. She might be the fastest player in the league, she HAS to be the fastest dribbler in the league- blows by defenders like the ball doesn’t slow her down at all, her work rate is amazing like playing with 12, her off-ball movement is incredible, her body control is impeccable for a medium-size player, her passing and vision are strong, and all these things give her somewhere between 2 and 6 golden opportunities to score every single game. Lucky for the league she is just okay at finishing or she’d have 30 already this season.

The river ball moment was great. I had no idea, but everyone in the stadium seemed to know. I was wondering what the cheer was about, thought I missed a PK foul before the shot or something.

If that becomes more common, I can’t wait to see a few kayakers hanging out down there like it’s San Francisco!

Depending on how strong the current is, of course.

The Current is Always strong my son…

the work rate of Chawinga is amazing. what i find be the most impressive is how relentless at pressing she is right after a turnover. the center back for Houston last night couldn’t do anything with the ball at her feet to try to start a counter attack. She seemed to figure out that if she just went down at the hint of any contact, she would get a foul call. I loved that she was kneeling, looking at the ref for another foul call as Chawinga ran away after scoring her goal. after the three fairly soft foul call on Chawinga, a lot of players would have stopped pressing as hard, given up outright, but she was still there at the end, and she got two goals out of it

And on the flip side the refs are letting a ton of really blatant arm and jersey pulls go, presumably under the guise of “advantage” though it really kills the momentum. I don’t think there’s a defender in the league that can contain her without some dark arts
