In Depth on the KC Current and One Existential SKC Question
The Kansas City Current are well on their way to an NWSL Shield. We break down the final game before the break and ask a big Sporting KC question.
For the Glory KC is back with the 137th episode of the show!
The KC Current lead off the show today with Sporting KC taking the weekend off. They played their last NWSL game until August 1st when they welcomed Angel City FC to town this past Friday night. While it was a closely contested match-up, the depleted Kansas City squad was able to put together their sixth consecutive win and stretch their lead in the standings to eight points as of this writing.
Angel City, despite being far down the table, were competitive and kept the match close. If not for penalty kick saving heroics by Lorena and possibly a Sarah Gordon cramp, the game may have had a different outcome. We got into all kinds of topics from the game.
In addition to game action, we got an update on what the Current will be doing on their upcoming break (outside of the Teal Rising Cup) and covered all their international call-ups for the upcoming international break, including Izzy Rodriguez’s first call by the full USWNT.
Sporting Kansas City didn’t play this weekend, so we just ask one question about them. What is your hope for the rest of their season? Sheena and I gave somewhat different answers and got into a debate about the quality of the roster. In particular around Daniel Salloi and Shapi Suleymanov. We both agreed they need to make moves and the secondary transfer window opens July 24th.
In the Digital Crawl, we touch on a few more topics, including:
- Benny Feilhaber wins!
- USMNT advance in the Gold Cup
- World Cup Qualifying
Here is a rundown of topics and start times:
- KC Current keep winning – 9:40
- One existential Sporting KC question – 51:17
- Digital Crawl – 1:04:33

Good Current-centric discussion this week! Like you, I’ve wondered about the continued appeal for players to join the NWSL. In your talk, you focused mostly on whether international players are interested, in this political climate, to move to the US. That’s part of what I wonder, but I’m also curious how players (international or domestic) view the NWSL competition level in comparison to, especially, certain European leagues. Obviously there have been a few American athletes going abroad recently, but that’s balanced by a number of highly talented international players coming stateside (though not players like Bonmatí, Putellas, Kerr, etc.).
I think a lot of times the belief is that there are a handful of teams (Barcelona, Chelsea, Lyon, etc.) in European leagues that may have a legitimate claim on being the “best”, but that top to bottom, the NWSL is the strongest league. I hope that can continue, especially as the league gets more player-friendly and invests more resources in facilities and salaries.
Thanks Xander.
I do think the NWSL is the best league overall in the world. I’ll be interested to see how the Current fair against those international teams if they remain on their current path and end up qualifying for the Women’s Club World Cup and a future FIFA Champions Cup.
