The Kansas City Current hosted Angel City FC for the final game before the summer break. The club also honored Juneteenth. The Current, hoping to extend their winning streak to six and remain at the top of the NWSL table, also looked to stay unbeaten at home this season. Coming into the match, the Current had won 13 of their last 14 home matches across all competitions, outscoring their opponents 38-8. That streak continued for another week as the Current defeated Angel City 1-0 before another packed CPKC Stadium, even as the temperatures reached felt like 100 degrees.

How they lined up

Pretty much the same as last week in a 4-3-3 formation. Midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta missed her third straight game due to the knee injury she suffered during national team duty last month. While she continued to improve, there was no need to rush LaBonta back. Midfielder Vanessa DiBenardo wore the Captain’s armband for the third game in a row in LaBonta’s absence.

First half highlights

For a game to be at CPKC Stadium and for it to be 0-0 at halftime was telling of the how the first half went. Angel City, looking for their first win since May 9, held Kansas City to five shots, two on goal. Captain and defender Sarah Gorden had quite the task to mark forward Temwa Chawinga, but she did her job as Chawinga recorded one goal in the half. Forward Michelle Cooper also had a quiet first half, but she created two chances, the most of the half for the Current. Cooper also marked her 50th regular season game, becoming the eight player in club history to reach that milestone.

Defensively, while Angel City won possession at 54%, the Current kept them from taking any shots on goal and overall shots, too. And after a gritty and physical first half, both teams headed to the locker room at 0-0.

Second half highlights

Both teams returned to a 100 degree feel evening still, despite the sun going down. With another 45 minutes to break the deadlock, the opportunity came for Angel City who earned a PK in the 54th minute after Elizabeth Ball took down Alyssa Thompson in the goal box. Whether that was the right call is debatable as it is with every PK call. And for the first time this game, goalkeeper Lorena would be tested. Lorena, being the world-class goalkeeper that she is, blocked Thompson’s PK, and the game remained 0-0.

With Lorena’s monumental save, it was now up to Kansas City to continue the pressure. It came in the 68th minute. Temwa Chawinga raced towards the ball after Izzy Rodriguez sent the pass forward. Chawinga’s shot was blocked, but Bia Zaneratto recovered, did a sweet roll with her heel before sending it in for goal. It was Bia’s fifth goal of the season, giving the KC Current the 1-0 lead in the 69th minute.

The 1-0 victory marked the sixth win for the Kansas City Current, remaining at the top of the NWSL standings as the league heads to the summer break. The goal by Bia was the game winner in the 69th minute, and the PK save by Lorena in the 57th was epic.

After the worst first half I have ever seen the Current play at home, the time period between Lorena’s magnificent PK save and Bia’s goal was the most electric atmosphere I have experienced at CPKC stadium since the stadium opener. Great way to go into the break.
