The Kansas City Current are back on the road to face the Boston Legacy. Kansas City is 2-6 away from CPKC Stadium this regular season so far. It will be also be a game without Temwa Chawinga, as she has departed to represent Malawi at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The tournament serves as the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier for African nations and takes place in Morocco from July 26 to August 16. Chawinga could miss 3-4 games during this time period. How the Current adapt without her in the attack is going to be the talk of the town.

What we’re watching

There are still many wonderments and questions regarding Chris Armas’ system. The days of the high press are gone, as well as the highly organized midfield and defense, and without Chawinga for a few games at a crucial time midseason, it may leave us wondering even more. The good news is that Kansas City is facing an expansion Boston Legacy team still trying to figure things out themselves. Boston is near the bottom of the table at 14th place and have lost three out of the last five games. But they play a very physical game and can easily keep the Current from scoring too many goals. Their last meeting in May was a 1-0 win with two yellow cards to the Boston side given late in the second half.

This game is winnable for the Current, even without Chawinga. Kansas City will again be without Michelle Cooper (thigh) and Lorena (hip) due to their respective injuries. The depth for the Current appears thin these days, so it will up to Croix Bethune, Debinha, and Haley Hopkins to be the creators in the attack. Bethune is tied for first in the NWSL with six regular season assists. We can assume Amelia White will fill in for Chawinga in her absence or perhaps Penelope Hocking who has yet to make an impact like she did at Bay FC. No doubt, someone will need to be the playmaker for the Current to come back to Kansas City with three points.
