Sporting Kansas City will be looking to continue the progress they showed against the Seattle Sounders as they head to the Pacific Northwest to take on another Cascadia team. On the docket this week are the Portland Timbers, a team in much worse form than the Sounders, who are one of the best teams in the league.

Last week’s 1-1 draw against Seattle was a way to stop the bleeding a bit. The team was on a six-game losing streak in all competitions and now it’s simply a seven-game winless streak. Up next, winning.

After conceding in the second minute against Seattle, the team firmed up its defensive shape and compactness and limited the quality of the Sounders attacks. They’ll need more of the same against a talented Portland team that is currently underperforming for the roster they have.

According to the staff over at Stumptown Footy, the Timbers are known as a team built around having direct attackers and chaos creators. They even jokingly referred to them as “dribbly boys.” Watching the team play, it seems they want to attack quickly after winning the ball, driver vertically through the midfield and create overloads in transition. Something SKC have been susceptible to this season but showed signs of fixing against Seattle.

If Sporting KC come out and are the more conservative team they’ve been the last two weeks, the Timbers may struggle to find joy. Also, where Portland are at their weakest is defending transitions. Last week, Sporting KC were reluctant to play balls over the top to a sprinting Capita, but that may be where they can catch the Timbers out. Rapha Wicky seemed to value possession, and the ability to rest with the ball, over being too direct. Ideally, they’ll find a balance of both this week.

Form

Sporting KC

  • vs. San Jose Earthquakes – 1-3 Loss
  • @ Colorado Springs Switchbacks – 0-3 Loss (Open Cup)
  • @ Vancouver Whitecaps – 0-3 Loss
  • @ Chicago Fire – 0-5 Loss
  • vs. Seattle Sounders – 1-1 Draw

Portland

  • @ Vancouver Whitecaps – 2-3 Loss
  • vs. LAFC – 2-1 Win
  • @ Minnesota United – 0-2 Loss
  • @ San Diego FC – 2-1 Win
  • @ Real Salt Lake – 0-2 Loss

The Phil Nevelle coached Timbers find themselves only two spots in the standings above the beleaguered Sporting KC side. The Timbers are 3-6-1 (10 points) through 10 games which is five points better than SKC’s 1-7-2 record. However, they have picked up two wins in their last four, while Sporting KC have only won once, way back in mid-March.

Predictions

The hope will be Kansas City can build on three of the last four halves of soccer they played (let’s forget about that 2nd half in Chicago). They have looked much more defensively solid and part of that could be new starting goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland. He is a player who has developed under top quality MLS goalkeepers in Stefan Frei (Seattle) and Brad Stuver (Austin). He’s a veteran at 31, but he’s never been a regular starter in MLS. (Is this giving anyone else Tim Melia vibes?)

Cleveland’s performance in the coming games, and his ability to organize his defenders around him, could mean it’s impossible to take him back out of the lineup.

One positive in facing the Timbers is they’ve only scored 13 goals on the season, which is only better than two teams in the Western Conference (KC and St. Louis). If Sporting KC can score first and play solid soccer defensively, they could steal a result on the road. However, KC have allowed 26 goals, which is third worst in the league behind the New York Red Bulls and Orlando City. Until they can show consistent results, it’s hard to pick them to win a game.

Score: 1-0 Portland
