Sporting KC dismantled in Vancouver 3-0
Sporting KC were awarded no points, and may god have mercy on their soul.
Sporting KC were thoroughly dismantled by top-of-the-table Vancouver Whitecaps by a final of 4-0 on Friday night. Emmanuel Sabbi and Thomas Müller led the way for the Whitecaps as SKC sink deeper into the 2026 MLS season.
At no point in that effort, did SKC even come close to a coherent soccer performance. Everyone watching is now in more pain as a result of watching this match. They were awarded no points, and may god have mercy on their soul.Â
Manu Garcia returned after missing the US Open Cup loss to Colorado Springs Switchbacks on Tuesday night. Additionally, 20-year-old Cielo Tschantret made the first start of his career
Vancouver nearly took the lead in the first 90 seconds and the visitors were on the back foot from the first roll of the ball. It would only take 13 minutes for the first goal to come. Unsurprisingly, Müller made a key touch in the build up and a couple touches later Sabbi smashed home an easy go-ahead goal. Sporting nearly broke up the play about five times in the build up, but the quality of the Vancouver attack was on full display here.
In most other matches so far this young season, we’ve seen SKC look like a strong side for periods of time. Sometimes even extended periods! This match, however, was different.
The skill and cleverness in Manu Garcia is apparent, even in a match like this. Dejan Joveljic – fighting through frustration – is lethal at any moment. Their ability can shine in quick, individual moments.
But once it leaves their feet… that light sputters quickly.
Brunco Caicedo doubled the lead for the Whitecaps in the 23rd minute. Tschantret started it with an awful, blind pass while building out of the back. Caicedo accepted the gift and calmly curled it off the far post and past John Pulskamp. Tschantret was eventually subbed off in the 51st minute.
Sabbi and Müller would link up for the third goal just six minutes later, and it was a beauty no matter how painful to SKC fans. Sabbi made the effort to save a long pass at the sideline, quickly turned and fired it into the box. His pass found the only white shirt in the box, the head of “der Raumdeuter”. The German legend put it home easier than most of us get out of bed in the morning.
If you look closely, he turned and winked at the camera as the ball floated towards him.
Raphael Wicky made a couple changes after the break, but there was no salvaging this match. The first shot on goal of the game for Sporting KC would come near start of the second half… only it was when Joveljic forced a save out of Pulskamp on the wrong end.
Perhaps the positive of the match was that no more damage was done after halftime.
The Vancouver Whitecaps leave with 21 points and in the lead for the Supporters’ Shield, compared to SKC’s point total of four. They may very well end the week at the bottom of Major League Soccer.
It was a week to forget for Sporting KC. Rather, let’s pretend it never happened.
Looking ahead, they’ll face off with the Chicago Fire at Soldier Field next Saturday.
