Matchday 5 Hybrid xG-Elo Analysis: Who’s Who, and Why?
Miami is back on top, and San Jose is the story of the week. Dive into the latest data-driven power rankings to see which teams are on the rise and which are living on borrowed time.
As we close out Matchday 5 and head into the international break, the Hybrid xG-Elo model is painting a clearer picture of where the quality lies, who’s improved from last season, and who is stumbling out of the gates. Here are the complete, updated Hybrid xG-Elo Power Rankings after Week 5!
Sporting KC’s Basement Blues
Sporting Kansas City remains cemented firmly at the bottom of the table (Rank 30) after a disastrous 4-1 home loss to the Colorado Rapids. Because this model carries over historical data, SKC couldn’t wipe the slate clean after their dismal 2025 season. They needed to string together consistently dominant performances to climb out of the basement. Instead, dropping points at home—which carries a penalty in this model due to the MLS home-field advantage weights—ensures they will be looking up at the rest of the league for at least the near future.
The Fall of Philadelphia (And Why They Are Still 12th)
If you look at the real-world MLS standings, the Philadelphia Union are in freefall after opening the 2026 campaign completely winless. Not just winless. Pointless. So why do they still sit in the top half of our table at Rank 12? This is the scenario where the model’s historical baseline comes into play. Philly was dominant over the past few seasons and built up an Elo buffer. The model still treats them like a champion on a losing streak rather than a genuinely bad team. However, that buffer is bleeding rapidly. They are consistently getting beaten, and the math shows this isn’t just a string of bad luck. If they don’t turn it around immediately, that safety net is going to vanish entirely.
Miami Retakes the Throne
Normalcy has returned to the top of the table. Inter Miami secured a crucial win this weekend, picking up 11.9 Elo points to leapfrog back into the #1 overall spot (1621.8). After a slight stumble earlier in the season, their recent form (LWWDW) shows they are still quality and consistently tilting the underlying xG math in their favor.
Chicago Cashes In on Philly’s Freefall
The Chicago Fire were one of the biggest winners of the week, jumping four spots to 11th overall after beating the Philadelphia Union. But here is where the math behind the Hybrid model comes into play: Chicago gained 14.1 Elo points for this win. Why? Because Philly’s rating is still inflated by their historical dominance. The model still viewed the Union as a statistical heavyweight, meaning Chicago essentially got credit for a massive upset. The Fire happily siphoned away a chunk of points from a Philly team that is currently playing poorly.
San Jose: The Mover of the Week
The official Mover of the Week award goes to the San Jose Earthquakes. They secured a huge away win over a very good Vancouver side, rocketing up three spots to 13th overall. By taking down a highly rated opponent in their own home, San Jose picked up 16.5 Elo points—the biggest single-game gain of the weekend. With a hot form line of WWWLW, the Earthquakes are starting to look like problem for the rest of the league.
Other Notable Movements
Elsewhere in the league, unbeaten Nashville SC moved into the #6 spot (+11.8 points) following their blowout 5-0 win over Orlando City that moved them atop the early Supporters’ Shield standings. Finally, FC Cincinnati managed to flip their fortunes and halt a three-game slide with a resilient 4-3 comeback win at home over CF Montréal, keeping them in the Top 10.
