Multiple Sources Link Sporting KC to 24-Year-Old Angolan Winger

Reports out of Poland and the United States link Angolan winger Capita with a move to Sporting Kansas City for a significant fee.

It’s not secret Sporting Kansas City have had a slow offseason. With just 20 players on the roster and the season only 11 days away, President of Soccer Operations David Lee has his work cut out for him. Today brought signs of life. Multiple rumors popped up, including two sources linking 24-year-old Angolan winger, Capita, to Sporting KC.

Polish reporter Tomasz Włodarczyk was first on the story with Tom Bogert quickly confirming the news.

Osvaldo Pedro Capemba, more commonly known as Capita, plays for Radomiak Radom, in the Ekstraklasa, which is the Polish first division.

According to Tomasz, German club Schalke was trying to pry him loose but failed to do so before Sporting KC swooped in and met the club’s asking price. Tomasz reports the fee is around €2 million, which is about $2.38m USD. Bogert says the fee is around $2m USD. Tomasz also says Radomiak Radom have a replacement lined up, which seems promising in terms of their willingness to let Capita go.

Who is Capita?

Capita plays for the Angolan national team, dating back to 2021. He only has three senior squad appearances but played more extensively for the U-17 Angola national team. Transfermarkt lists him as primarily a left winger who can play on the right and occasionally as an attacking midfielder. While he’s listed as a left winger, he is also listed as left footed on TM (but the highlights below may contradict that dominant foot). It’s unclear if new coach Rapha Wicky prefers to invert his wingers, like we’ve seen in past seasons at Sporting KC (e.g. playing a left footed winger on the right side).

Capita recently signed an extension with his club in the Fall of 2025, extending his contract through June of 2028. That explains the need for a transfer fee to get him from Europe to MLS.

Before joining Radomiak Radom, Capita played for Estrela Amadora in Portugal and Hapoel Jerusalem on a loan spell while at the Portuguese club. He also has experience in France and Belgium having played permanently or been on loan with seven clubs since 2020.

This season he has 17 appearances for his mid table club across all competitions. In that time, he’s scored five times and added an assist, racking up 1,061 minutes. Last season he had six goals and an assist in just over 800 minutes. For his career, he has 20 goals and six assists in 95 appearances.

Sporting KC Fit

With Rapha Wicky having coached a mere two of the four preseason games, it’s hard to know how he wants this team to lineup. They were playing with three forwards early in preseason, but last week rolled out a lineup that essentially had four players who typically play forward on the field. Regardless, they absolutely need more talent in the forward line to compliment striker Dejan Joveljic.

Daniel Salloi is the starting left winger, but he’s out of contract after the season. He’s backed up by former MLS SuperDraft pick, Stephen Afrifa, but we saw new signing Calvin Harris playing wide left against Minnesota United last weekend. On the right, where Capita will play if they continue to invert their wingers, the team has second-year addition Shapi Suleymanov and the aforementioned Harris (who lined up there earlier in preseason).

In terms of salary fit, it’s unclear where Capita is likely to fall salary wise. There is no reported salary data on him since 2021, when he made well below the MLS minimum, so certainly he’s gotten a raise since then. The approximately $2m fee would likely require Sporting KC to spend some form of Allocation Money (GAM or TAM) to buy down his cap charge. However, that fee would be prorated over the life of the contract, which will likely be three or four years long for that kind of transfer fee. Regardless, Sporting KC have a ton of room in their budget to make multiple additions.

Highlights

When it looked like he was headed to Schalke 04, the below highlight package was put together. He primarily lines up on the left and has goals scored with both feet and his head, but he tends to favor his right foot. He definitely looks quick and has a decent first touch. There are several plays that typically would be scrubbed from a “highlight” package, which is appreciate since these tend to be a little too slick sometimes.

What do you all think? Do you like this move for Sporting KC? And do you only like it because they are actually doing something?

Since 2014, Chad Smith has been deeply involved in covering Kansas City soccer. He's written about Sporting KC, the KC Current and SKC II for numerous platforms, including The Blue Testament, which was the precursor to the KC Soccer Journal. While his initial connection to Sporting KC was established in Phoenix covering preseason, he now resides in the Kansas City area, offering thorough analysis and a strong commitment to local soccer.

I’m sorry, WHAT? Multiple transfer rumors in the span of a few days? And I wasn’t even checking this website because I assumed nothing was happening. I turn my SKC brain off for a second and we’re finally cooking up some deals!

However, it seems that there will be no record transfer for Radomiak. The player himself does not want to change his surroundings for the time being.

At a press conference, Goncalo Feio left no doubt about this. The Portuguese coach talked about his conversation with the player.

“He came to my office, we talked, and he said he did not want to leave. He feels very comfortable in the city, the club and the team. He trusts the director and the staff. His wife has joined him and lives with him. He is surrounded by us and happy,” said Feio at a press conference, as quoted by Szymon Janczyk.

Unfortunately sounds done

I mean, we’re Sporting fans, we could expect the good vibes to continue for too long right? That’s disappointing for sure, but at least it’s a sign of life in the front office. I am getting pretty tired of hearing how many deals fall through though…
