Is John Pulskamp ready to be the starter?
Sporting KC have put all their confidence in the 23-year-old keeper this season.
The gloves have been handed over to John Pulskamp as the starting keeper in 2025, but is he ready? The Big Bear has long been the heir apparent to a strong lineage of goalkeepers at Sporting KC. With the departure of Tim Melia, it’s time for Pulskamp to ascend.
While he was the assumed starter for this upcoming season, some might have expected the club to bring in a more experienced keeper to back him up. Perhaps to challenge and/or mentor Pulskamp this season. However, it looks like Sporting KC are putting all their confidence in the 23-year-old (he’ll be 24 in April).
Behind Pulskamp in reserve this season, it will be Ryan Schewe. The 22-year-old was the 22nd overall pick in the 2024 draft and does not have a single appearance with the first team yet.
Over the past two seasons, Pulskamp played in 19 matches across all competitions. We’ve seen glimpses of why the club thinks so highly of him. He’s confident, strong. Those big paws are quick. But we’ve also seen plenty of mistakes and where the (still) young keeper needs to grow.
But his days as a prospect are now over. The Age of the Bear has arrived. Long may he reign!
The latest episode of Shades of Blue ends with our debate about John Pulskamp, and if he’s ready to be Sporting KC’s starting keeper this year.
Of course, we started off with the big news that Sporting KC acquired Dejan Joveljic. Get our reactions, how he fits in with the Peter Vermes system, and thoughts on how Mike Burns has handled this offseason. Plus, we’re arguing about changes to MLS as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup. Last Week: Erik Thommy ready to play wherever need this season

It would probably be great if the MLS could “join” the international calendar, but in terms of the American sports calendar it would insane. Start the season up against the NFL/NCAA football juggernaut, leading straight into fighting March Madness and ending against the start of baseball season, when people are actually paying attention to baseball. They just aren’t there yet.
I’ll add to that:
Introducing what would have to be a 1.5-2 month gap in the regular season (remember how much people whined about the Leagues Cup stoppage, when at least soccer was still being played by teams?)Ending not just against the start of baseball season, but up against the playoff races and playoffs of both NBA and NHLLosing much of the summer when the only other sport is baseball and many people (including kids) have more free timeTrading summer heat for winter cold/storms, the latter being far more problematic for outdoor fansPossibly introducing long non-home-stands for teams trying to avoid bad weather.
To me it’s an absolutely unrealistic idea that can only be taken seriously if one knows nothing about either North American sports or geography
