SKC II
Sporting KC II defeats Vancouver Whitecaps 2
A pair of teenagers scored to take victory over Vancouver 2
Sporting Kansas City II came from behind twice Sunday to earn the MLS NEXT PRO side their first win of the 2026 season. It was not the only first for SKC II, but it was new head coach Lee Tschantret’s first professional win.
“I thought it was a really competitive, well-played game,” Tschantret explained after the match. “Both teams had opportunities, at the end of the day, we scored one more than them. I think both teams had some quality opportunities, both teams defended. I think there was ebbs and flows to the game. There were times where they had good possession and times where we were keeping good possession. Overall, the fight of the boys was fantastic. They’re starting to get that understanding of what I think you need to put into a match for 90 minutes and starting to see a little bit of fruits of our labor.”
The first half ended scoreless with both team having chances and both goalkeepers making quality saves to keep it level. SKC II had more good chances, but Whitecaps 2 had the best chance of the first half but ended up skying the ball over the goal.
SKC II kept fighting and earned a golden opportunity to level the score when Pierre Lurot earned a penalty in the 61st. Vancouver’s keeper came up big when he stopped Missael Rodriguez’s attempt from the spot.
The game stayed energetic with both teams making substitutions, including a trio that would end up on the scoresheet for SKC II.
Carter Derksen’s through pass set up Rodriguez for another opportunity, and the SKC II attacker did not disappoint. Rodriguez took a touch into the box and powered a shot into the net to level the game 1-1 in the 71st minute.
Just two minutes later, the Whitecaps took the lead back. SKC II struggled to clear the ball out of danger and Trevor Wright made the home team pay.
With SKC II down by a goal, the young side responded well and kept up the pressure. Rodriguez dribbled into the Vancouver box where Daniel Russo took over and crossed back across the goal to Zamir Loyo Reynaga. The 15-year-old took a touch and calmly put it in the far corner to level the game in the 89th minute. Russo had entered the game in the 62nd and Loyo Reynaga in the 69th and both made an impact.
It was Loyo Reynaga’s first professional goal.
“Zamir came in in a tough situation,” Tschantret explained. “He actually played 45 minutes yesterday with the academy. So, coming into a situation late in the game, I thought he did a very good job. Zamir does what he does well. He was opening up the defense with some clever passes, and his goal was fantastic. That composure of slowing the game down at that moment inside the box to take a touch and to have that calm finish is above his years.”
The match did not end there. Mackenzie earned a yellow for a hard shove out of bounds that saw Hass land on the concrete at the edge of a bleacher. Kashan Hines was the hero for the night in the 97th minute. Derksen earned his second assist of the evening when he again found an attacker with a through ball. The goal was also Hines’ first of his pro career and earned Sporting KC II all three points.
“Kashan came off the bench, played fantastic, gave us some energy. He was getting knocked around a little bit. But he found his footing and a very good finish,” Tschantret stated.
With that game winner, Hines earned MLS NEXT Rising Star of the Match week.
