Sporting KC Rumors, Results and Wicky’s Job Security
For the Glory KC is back with the 188th episode of the show!
Sporting Kansas City had a very busy week. They played two more games, which we’ll get to, but they also were much more firmly linked to Brazilian winger Andre Luiz (sorry for calling him David on the podcast over and over before getting my act together).
Tom Bogert is reporting the deal isn’t done yet, but “it is getting closer.”
He and Globo (Brazil) are both reporting an $18 million transfer fee with up to $4m in add-ons. Other outlets have it even higher. Sheena and I work through all the feelings on this. Is it too much money? Does it matter if Peter Mallouk will keep spending? Will he make this team better? And we can’t forget to talk about Mo Salah more as well and if that deal remains a possibility.
Then we work our way through the highest of highs and the lowest of lows in a week. Sporting KC played their first home game in two months and defeated Minnesota United. But then they went on the road and laid an egg in a 4-0 loss to LAFC.
It had quite a few people calling for Raphael Wicky’s job, just 17 games into the season. With 17 to go, is it too early to pull the plug?
Plus, we talk briefly about the blown call that PRO admitted to around the St. Louis City SC game and some big Gianluca Busio news.
PRO Referees Admit Mistake in Sporting KC vs. St. Louis City
In KC Current news, they lost. Again. They are an abysmal 1-3-1 since returning from their World Cup break. It makes that world’s best team slogan come off really silly. This time they lost to the Boston Legacy, who are way down the table.
In the Digital Crawl, we hit a few more topics:
- Kansas City World Cup ratings (we’re #1 baby!)
- Casemiro’s deal with Inter Miami
- And a huge transfer fee for a 15-year-old, Benji Flowers, out of FC Dallas
Here is a rundown of sections and start times:

Calls for “Wicky out” are entirely premature. He’s attempting to correct a problem years in the making that he didn’t create. I’d argue things have shown more promise than in years past. Acquisitions are continuing to roll in. In fairness to Wicky, he still doesn’t know what his roster is going to look like yet. The conversation about his tenure can wait for the end of his contract.
Calling for Wicky out is just silly. Everyone that follows SKC knew that this season was going to be a red hot mess based on off season acquisitions. The coach hire delay, the poor and last second roster construction, missing out on all the good MLS free agents…the list is long. I don’t think anyone on here thinks that SKC did well getting ready for this year. The roster is clearly below average and probably much closer to the worst in the league than any SKC fan, owner, coach, play would like.
All that said, Wicky seems like he is trying things to make the team better. The front office are actively trying to get players to improve the roster. The team seems like they are starting to connect passes better and play much more organized soccer. I’m not beating the overly optimistic drum here. Things are improving and I think that is pretty clear. LAFC has an elite counterattack and SKC got burned hard by it. I think they will play against LAFC much better next time they face them.
TLDR – the sky is not falling.
Here, here..
Agreed. The reaction after the LAFC game was surprising. But a lot of more prominent SKC folks/hosts were saying he isn’t it.
Maybe he isn’t. But it’s too soon. Let’s see what he can do as Lee finds him more pieces.
I remember all the hype around the fullback John ‘Xuxu’ Hilton a decade or so ago. He’s currently out of contract in the Erste Divise club FC Dordrecht. He comes with a transfer of $180k and I think his salary was around $350k. He’s only 25 and he was on the USMNT U16 international roster. This is just a name I’m throwing out at a position we could use some help (he prefers to play out on the left). I also don’t know if he is interested in coming back stateside. After the success of the WC I wonder if more American players would want to come back to the states.
I don’t know anything about this guy, but Lee does need to sign some Americans. Not everyone can be taking up an international spot. I think they are probably set at LB for now. I assume they want another right back, but maybe not? And we know they are looking for expensive attackers.
