With the expected arrival of a new attacking midfielder, Erik Thommy is being deployed as a winger for Sporting KC this preseason. He’s featured up front several times in the past out of necessity, but it may be a regular occurrence in 2025. The German says he is ready to play wherever his team needs him in 2025.

Thommy played on the wing in their most recent 2-0 loss to Chicago and was even introduced as a forward when speaking to media after the match. He may have still sounded a bit unsure about the move, but Thommy is the ultimate professional.

Wherever the coach plans me to play, I’m always there and will give 100 percent. We will see, we have a long season ahead of us… if the winger position is the right position for me in that formation, I can totally accept it.”

I know I’m not breaking any new ground here, but last season was ugly for Sporting KC. They struggled to move the ball through the midfield and create meaningful chances all year long. Much of that responsibility was on Erik Thommy’s shoulders as the assumed #10. At times, he was the best player on the team and the only source of hope throughout those dark days. But more was needed from the attacking midfielder.

Thommy is always active. He’s a positive player and always wants to push forward. But sometimes that can turn chaotic. Peter Vermes once compared him to Felipe Gutierrez, a midfielder who is able to ‘do more with less’.

The idea this offseason, is to bring in a #10 to do all that other work of getting up the field into danger areas. THEN he can unleash that massive burst of electricity which is pulsating through every inch of Erik Thommy, right in front of goal. The man will have nowhere else to go but leave a human-shaped hole through the back of the net.

It’s a long season and Thommy will likely be used in a number of ways. Vermes loves him some versatility, after all. But the Shades of Blue Soccer Show likes the possibility of seeing Top Gun Thommy in an attacking role this year.
