The rivalry continued to bring yet another nail-biting evening of thrills, chills and arena soccer goals. Sunday marked this season’s second meeting of the Midwest powerhouses, as the Milwaukee Wave visited Cable Dahmer Arena with their sights set on disrupting an electric crowd for Comet fans and spectators around the MASL. In addition, the 30th year of KC’s beloved commentator, Nick “Where Grandma Keeps the Cookies” Vasos, was fashionably celebrated with a personalized Comets jersey during the team pregame announcements. One moment and thoughtful gesture he will always cherish and remember for years to come.

The match kicked off with belittling tackles, sending the Milwaukee squad into their first penalty for too many men on the field. In capitalizing fashion, Flores put away his top-class finish into the top shelf for the Comet’s first lead of the evening (5:14).

Alex Steinwascher claimed his first tally on the match, with a deflected goal squeaking past the KC goalkeeper, Coronado, who notched his second start of the season due to an Ejimadu pregame injury (9:08). Seconds after another Wave blue card penalty for tripping, MASL point leader, Reget, tallied his first point off the creative restart to tie the game (11:18). Milwaukee stayed hungry around the box, capitalizing again with another restart goal by Wave veteran, Ferdinand (12:52).

The Comets went ahead 3-2 when Lenis regrouped from a physical push down, only to tap home the heads up assist from Marques, for his first goal of the evening (2:38). Yet, the missed clearances by KC brought on pressured Wave attack, as Alvarez returned the favor to KC (6:38).

Milwaukee’s Sanchez notched another tally for the visitors with his freekick erupting past the Comet’s wall and Coronado (8:34). The score moving into halftime was highly indictive of the boxing match occurring on the field.

As the night commemorated the magical voice of KC, celebrating the last 30 seasons commentating Kansas City Comets home matches, Vasos’ voice erupted with his, “where grandma keeps the cookies,” following Flores’ assist and Reget’s 2nd goal of the night, sending the KC fans into a frenzy of excitement (1:10). The Wave were quick to answer the cheers with another crafty attack by Sanchez, netting his second goal of the match (2:46).

Milwaukee’s ‘beloved’ Huffman found his wallascora effort successful, providing Alvarez the back door tap in scoring buffer (9:12). With the Comets determined to fight until the final whistle, Lenis ricocheted his shot into the Milwaukee box for Thetsane’s 5th goal of the season, bringing the crowd to its feet (12:25).

As the match entered the fourth quarter, both sides were salivating for goals and potential attacking opportunities. Unfortunately, the Wave’s Steinwascher brothers capitalized with transition assists to each other, sending the visitors into a 3-goal lead (4:51; 6:10). Seconds later, Reget completed his hattrick efforts with a one-time smash past the retreating Milwaukee defense (6:25).

Marques eventually makes his stamp on the match with his first goal of the night, sending KC into utilize their 6th attacker (7:55). The Comets had some impressive scoring opportunities, but Milwaukee GK Banahene’s 4 crucial saves in the final minutes helped elevate his team to compete into the final seconds of the match.

As the final whistle blew, official reviews confirmed a Milwaukee kicking foul occurred feet outside of their box with 0:02 on the clock, awarding the Comets one heart pounding effort to tie their northern rivals. the free kick set up Francis, but Wave defenders collapsed and Banahene slapped the ball from the crossbar, ending the heated battle between these two high powered offenses.
