Across State Lines: Former Players Win Ron Newman Cup

The 2025-2026 MASL season came to a close this past week with the finals of the Ron Newman Cup playoffs which saw the San Diego Sockers take down the Milwaukee Wave in three games. Three players with ties to Kansas City were on the winning Sockers’ side. Former Sporting KC draft pick, Mitchell Cardenas and former Sporting KC and KC Comets goalkeeper, Boris Pardo were available for all three of the games, though Pardo didn’t appear in the final. The third is former Comets’ defender, Stefan Mijatovic, who appeared in the first game of the series, a 5-4 win by San Diego, but an altercation between Sockers players and Wave fans saw the league hand down fines and suspensions to the Sockers, fines for the Wave, and some bans to Wave fans who were identified in the videos.

For Mijatovic though, because he was on a zero tolerance probation status, was expelled from the MASL for his involvement in the incident.
