Who is Sporting KC Minority Owner Peter Mallouk?

Have you ever heard of Peter Mallouk? Well he quietly owns a minority stake in Sporting Kansas City (and the Royals).

Peter Mallouk. It’s a name that Sporting Kansas City fans may be unfamiliar with. I know personally, I didn’t know who he was until a Reddit thread popped up about him. A post that has since been deleted by the original poster (as the SKC Reddit admins confirmed, it wasn’t them that deleted it). That said, the rest of the conversation is still there.

If you missed the original posts (above), there were discussions about it on the subsequent Shades of Blue and Home and Away podcasts. I recommend listening in for some additional insights.

The deleted post talked about Mallouk wanting to take a larger or controlling interest in Sporting KC. The original poster, RandyWatson23, obviously deleted his post for a reason. Drew, from the Home and Away podcast, said “I feel comfortable saying this. This is not the first time I’ve heard a rumor like this, specifically about Peter Maluk potentially becoming a more significant member of the ownership group.” Drew goes on to say he knows nothing, and it may be nothing.

Even if it’s nothing, it feels like a guy we should know more about.

What is the Mallouk/Sporting KC Connection?

Since at least November of 2022, Peter Mallouk has been a minority owner of Sporting KC, according to a Securities and Exchange commission filing. The SEC filing shows he’s a minority owner and that he has no day-to-day duties.

There is not much publicly available information to go on.

Who Else Owns Sporting KC?

Sporting KC’s own website doesn’t even list Mallouk as an owner, but it does list six other individuals or families. The principal owners are the Illig and Patterson families. Cliff Illig and Neal Patterson were part of the group behind OnGoal LLC (now Sporting Club) who saved the then Kansas City Wizards from relocating out of KC. They were joined by Pat Curran, Robb Heineman, Greg Maday and David French with that saving purchase back in 2006.

Since then, Patrick Mahomes has formally joined the ownership group. At some point, Peter Mallouk joined in as well. French has seemingly departed.

Unfortunately, Neal Patterson passed away in 2017. He went to Oklahoma State University and loved the color orange. If you’ve ever wondered why the 2017 on the wall of Children’s Mercy Park for the US Open Cup win is written in orange, now you know. It’s for Neal. His wife, Jeanne Illig-Patterson, passed away shortly after he did and their children maintain their ownership stake. In 2024, Pat Curran passed away as well.

Let’s Talk Net Worth

The reason the Peter Mallouk talk really got people excited has to do with his wealth. According to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index, the 55-year-old is worth $10.9 billion. That makes him the 309th richest person in the world!

For comparison, Cliff Illig was reported to be worth $1.15 billion back in 2015 by Forbes. In 2017, Forbes had Patterson’s wealth at $1.5 billion. That was before the former Cerner founders sold their company to Oracle for $28.3 billion. It’s likely their families net worth has climbed, but not to the level of Mallouk.

As for the other owners, the data is less clear. There are estimates out there that are all over the place. None of them are poor, but it’s the Illig’s and the Patterson’s that are the principal investors in the club. And their wealth is dwarfed by Peter Mallouk.

Who is Peter Mallouk?

That gets us to the main question. Who actually is Peter Mallouk? The lovely podcast, There’s Just Something about Kansas City, sat down with Mallouk a few months ago and do a great job of covering his story. I would encourage you to watch or listen to the whole interview.

If you don’t have the time, we can hit the high points. He made most of his fortune as the President and CEO of Creative Planning, an independent wealth management firm based out of Kansas City. He’s the child of Lebanese and Egyptian immigrants. His parents moved to Kansas City because they happened to have a family willing to take them in. That family just happened to have an open basement in the Waldo Brookside area.

Mallouk is a serial entrepreneur. He owned a chain of record stores when he was very young until a customer walked in and asked him if he’d ever heard of Napster. He was out of that business shortly after.

As young man, he worked for the Royals fetching items for whatever road team was in town (the podcast has some incredible stories). Mallouk is now part owner of the Royals as well.

He had multiple majors in college and ended up with several degrees. He says because he was indecisive, but it set him up to have a diverse set of skills.

Maybe most importantly, the 55-year-old knows he started life “on third base.” He doesn’t seem to take his station in life for granted. He and his wife give back. They started KC CAN (Children’s Assistance Network) that makes a difference all over Kansas City for kids.

While there is no official indication Mallouk will take a larger role in Sporting KC now or ever, it’s good to have a little more insight into another owner of the team.

Since 2014, Chad Smith has been deeply involved in covering Kansas City soccer. He's written about Sporting KC, the KC Current and SKC II for numerous platforms, including The Blue Testament, which was the precursor to the KC Soccer Journal. While his initial connection to Sporting KC was established in Phoenix covering preseason, he now resides in the Kansas City area, offering thorough analysis and a strong commitment to local soccer.

Very cool insight into one of the owners.

Now, I hope he can leverage that clout into a few signings.

Yes, this was very interesting. Thanks for the work you put into it. Grasping at any straws of hope right now because the team sure isn’t giving us much.
