The offseason is officially underway for Sporting Kansas City. Last week the team announced a series of roster moves, mostly consisting of moving on from players. This week, the team has their first “addition” of the offseason. Sort of.

Sporting KC announced they have re-signed goalkeeper Ryan Schewe after declining his contract option last week. The team had indicated they wanted to continue negotiations with Ryan and they were able to get that over the line quickly. The new deal is a slight extension on the old one. Schewe is signed through the 2026 season with options for 2027 and 2028. That’s one extra option year over his original contract.

The re-signing brings the roster up to 13 players under contract for 2026, including three goalkeepers. Schewe rejoins the goalkeeper room with John Pulskamp and Jack Kortkamp. You might think that means the GK portion of the roster is set, but that wouldn’t be quiet right. New President of Soccer Operations, David Lee, told the gathered media last week he would like the team to have four goalkeepers on the roster.

It would seem that GK would be a veteran. “I would also agree that the goalkeeping group was young,” said Lee. “So, if we can find the right goalkeeper to add a little more experience into that group. I do believe that will benefit that group as a whole.”

Free agency opens on December 10th, if the team wants to add a veteran from within MLS.

More on Schewe

Ryan Schewe initially joined Sporting KC ahead of the 2024 MLS season after being the 22nd overall pick in that year’s draft. Despite spending two seasons on the roster, Schewe has yet to make it into an MLS game. This year, he primarily served as the number two keeper behind Pulskamp after spending year one behind John as well as Tim Melia in 2024.

Schewe has spent time playing for SKC II, racking up 17 appearances over two seasons. However, in 2025, as he was needed for the first team bench, he only got two second team appearances.

With Lee planning to have four goalkeepers, it seems likely one of them will be loaned to SKC II for the full season to clear a roster spot. If not, SKC didn’t use five of their roster spots in 2025, so there is room for four goalkeepers. Either way, the depth at keeper should ensure guys like Schewe and Kortkamp can spend time with Sporting KC II to get more consistent minutes in MLS Next Pro.

Before coming to Sporting KC, Schewe played collegiately for Georgetown University. In his final season in college, he was Big East Goalkeeper of the Year and was First Team All-Big East. Before college, he spent time in the Atlanta United Academy.

Since 2014, Chad Smith has been deeply involved in covering Kansas City soccer. He's written about Sporting KC, the KC Current and SKC II for numerous platforms, including The Blue Testament, which was the precursor to the KC Soccer Journal. While his initial connection to Sporting KC was established in Phoenix covering preseason, he now resides in the Kansas City area, offering thorough analysis and a strong commitment to local soccer.
