This isn’t the Old Sporting KC

Sure, Sporting Kansas City still sit in last place in all of Major League Soccer. But the team that looked destined for the Wooden Spoon has come alive in the last month. They’ve bagged 11 goals in four games, though only have six points to show for it. A big 3-1 home win over LAFC may have been the impetus for former Swope Park Ranger’s coach Marc dos Santos to lose his job.

On either side of that big win against perennial contenders LAFC, were massive collapses. First to FC Dallas, after an early 2-0 lead. Then to the Philadelphia Union after a 3-0 lead. It had some calling for Rapha Wicky’s job.

His response? Post a 2-0 shutout on the road at the then second place Houston Dynamo. Andre Luiz has spearheaded this offensive revival with an astounding four goals and an assist in just 317 minutes of MLS action.

The offense may be clicking but the defense needed a Hector Herrera red card to secure their first shutout. Sure, Taylor Calheira sold it the contact, but hands to the throat are a red every time. Calheira picked up a fine for his troubles too and KC managed to eke out the clean sheet despite being up a man.

Sounders Roster Shifts: What Has Changed Since May?

When these two Western Conference clubs drew 1-1 at Sporting Park back on May 2, Dejan Joveljić leveled the match for Sporting KC in the 17th minute after Paul Rothrock opened the scoring inside 60 seconds. Fast-forward to the late-season sprint, and the dynamic between the squads looks markedly different.

In a headline-grabbing late-August blockbuster, Seattle acquired Joveljić as a Designated Player directly from Sporting KC in exchange for $6 million in cash. While the blockbuster transfer added serious firepower to Brian Schmetzer’s attack, Seattle will have to manage without their high-profile addition on Thursday, as Joveljić remains away on international duty with the Serbian national team following their UEFA Nations League window.

Beyond Joveljić, Seattle made another shrewd reinforcement right before the secondary transfer window slammed shut by acquiring versatile midfielder Caden Clark from D.C. United in exchange for a 2028 second-round SuperDraft selection. Clark has integrated immediately into Schmetzer’s 4-2-3-1 attacking midfield band, logging a goal off the bench against the Colorado Rapids and starting each of Seattle’s last two league fixtures.

Key Matchup Stats & Trends

  • Historical Series Edge: Through 31 all-time regular season and postseason meetings, Seattle holds a 15W-11L-5D advantage over Sporting KC per FootyStats.

  • Road Clean Sheet Momentum: Sporting KC’s 2-0 victory in Houston snapped a season long streak of not earning a clean sheet. Houston being reduced to 10 men likely played a part and with the news that Moises Mosquera is once again not available, Jansen Miller and Wyatt Meyer will be put to the test in the Pacific Northwest.

  • Lumen Field Fortification: Across all competitions in 2026, Seattle has turned Lumen Field into an imposing venue that is tough to get all three points. Just twice this year have opponents come in and won. They are 6W-2L-5D record across 13 MLS regular-season matches at home.

  • Defensive Stinginess: The Sounders have allowed just 11 goals in 13 home games (0.85 goals against per match), posting five clean sheets in front of their home supporters.

  • Second-Half Surges: 12 of Seattle’s 19 home goals scored this season have arrived after the 55th minute, emphasizing their tendency to wear down opponents with possession and second-half substitutions. That could spell trouble for SKC who have collapsed multiple times in the second half over the course of the year.

Predictions

Seattle is about the healthiest they’ve been all year, despite a few names still showing up unavailable. Despite the unavailability of Dejan, the team has managed back-to-back wins. Danny Musovski has filled in admirably.

Kansas City enter off the back of a big win, but with a banged-up defense and the unforgiving turf in Seattle on the horizon, it seems they may come back down to earth. They haven’t strung together back-to-back wins since May, when they beat the LA Galaxy before heading to Austin three days later for a road win.

This is the vaunted “game in hand” that SKC have over CF Montreal, and recent form shows to expect the unexpected. A win feels like a bridge too far.
