LISTEN: A complex web of cash grab tournaments
The American summer soccer schedule looks very different with the introduction of new tournaments which fans aren’t sure about.
A Summer Cup played in the fall. A Women’s Cup played in the summer, plus multiple iterations throughout the year. And a Leagues Cup with only a single league in the Semifinals.
What channel is all of this on? Do I know anyone with a Vizio Smart TV?
A complex web of new tournaments has pervaded American soccer. Some, more objectionable than others. Where do you stand with the new summer schedule? Are we growing the game… or grabbing money?
This week’s Shade of Blue covers that wild summer of soccer as we return to normal MLS & NWSL league play this weekend. The KC Current won their first trophy in the Women’s Cup. How excited should we be?
We’ve got a new voice on the show! Please welcome Carrie Robinson, who you may already know from being hilarious on Twitter.

At a bare minimum, this was a bad summer to have lots of tournaments, with the soccer and sports schedule unusually full already. People have only so much time and money to spare.
I like the idea. Keeping the squad in form while the Olympics were ongoing was great. I don’t think the Women’s Cup trophy will be the one we are proudest of in the future, but it gave some players some field time and kept the attack sharp. I think the Summer Cup will get better too, as Liga MX gets more serious about women’s soccer.
Now that the USL has kicked off their “first division” there should be a women’s US Open Cup opportunity in the near future too.
Just, please, please, don’t get sponsorship from a TV brand…
