Sporting KC
Sporting KC signs defender Joaquín Fernández
Veteran defender with La Liga experience added
Sporting Kansas City announced they have signed Joaquín Fernández to a contract through 2025. Fernández is a 6-foot-3, 28-year-old Spanish center back that can also play the defensive midfielder role. He has made over 300 appearances during his 12-year professional career, including 85 matches in Spains La Liga with Real Valladolid.
Fernández started his career with the youth academy of UD Almeria in his hometown. He quickly advanced to Almeria B as a 16-year-old in the Spanish third division. He moved to Almeria’s first team in the Spanish Segunda in 2015 and became their regular starting center back. First-division Real Valladolid came calling in 2018 and Fernández made his La Liga debut in November 2018.
Fernández was most recently with Trabzonspor in the Turkish Süper Lig. He joined them in June of 2023, signing a two-year contract, but only made thirteen league appearances as he battled injuries. Fernández and Trabzonspor mutually agreed to part ways in July of 2024.
Short Contract
With the contract only running through 2025, essentially an eighteen-month deal, Sporting KC is minimizing the risk if Fernández does not stay healthy. If he does overcome his injury woes, they can always attempt to re-sign him next season to a longer deal.
Versatility
Fernández has played primarily in the center back role but is no stranger to the defensive midfield position. According to Transfermsarkt, he played 170 games at center back, 69 at defensive mid, and 27 as a central midfielder. There was even one at right-back apperance but it is unlikely Sporting KC will use him there if it is not an emergency move.
While most of his matches have been at center back, having the experience at the six will make him useful coming off the bench or switching up the formation later in matches. Some of his appearances at defensive mid were coming off the bench late in a match, probably to help close out the game in a double pivot. He does have starts in those roles as well.
Left-sided competition
As a lefty, Fernández will be primarily competing with Andreu Fontàs and Robert Voloder for the remainder of the 2024 season.

Whelp, Howlie is gettin punched…
Yeah he is…yay?
Holy Smokes!!! They did it… I know nothing of this guy. But They signed a player! Hats off.. Maybe, just maybe, they will come through in the end and really adjust this team to be great over the next season or 2. Time will tell.
I Just looked it up and Süper Lig is ranked 11th in leagues around the world… so maybe this dude will be a highlight to SKC
Looks like he was coming off of an ACL tear sometime in 2023. He missed the season from Aug 23 to Jan 24. Then, he played some logging 540 minutes for the 23/24 season. His only injury free season was 22/23 at least according to transfermarkt. FM rates him as athletic, aggressive and great at headers. I’m guessing he will play a lot like Rosero. FM did rate his leadership very low (2 out of 17).
yawn
I came here for hot takes on European castoffs over the age of 27; not investing in youth, etc… I feel mildly letdown. There’re hints of actual optimism here.
I mean…when you’re at the bottom of the manure pile, even the gas bubbles rise.

he will fit right in
Nice header!
This is an upgrade. Left cb is a black hole for our defense. Our defenders struggle against the ball in the air. This will help that. Next to Rosero we’ll have two heading threats on corners.
I would like to see a younger signing. Just glad the process of building a new roster has begun. This signing though, with injury problems. Paired with a coach known to blame his failures on injured players kind of sucks.
I’ll try to be optimistic and pretend PV isn’t making every roster decision.
Thad tweeted later that PV told him he’s actually right footed. So maybe he provides support for Rosero AND can play that spot if needed. He does primarily lineup on the left and all the databases say he’s left footed, so who knows.
Like most of our signings, hopefully he stays healthy.
