Alan Pulido is heating up at just the right time

With Chivas sniffing and rumors swirling, Alan Pulido has found his form just at the right time. Should Sporting KC resign him?

The rumors are swirling around Sporting KC’s star striker, Alan Pulido. His old club Chivas wants him back, but all of a sudden Sporting KC looks like a team who wants to compete this season. This week, the Shades of Blue Soccer Show tries to decide what to do with the 32-year-old Mexican.

It was a big week in the world of soccer with the Champion’s League Final, the Messi to MLS news, and SKC climbing above the MLS playoff line. Robert Castellanos played his best match ever in the top flight, scoring a goal along the way. The replacement defense team of the Robert & Robert Associates kept us out of trouble, for the most part, in the 4-1 win over Austin FC. Khiry Shelton got in on the scoring and Peter Vermes had some strong words for him after the match. Daniel Salloi wore the captain’s armband for the first time in his career.

Also, is Tim Leibold good looking?

We also talk more about el mejor del mundo, Lionel Messi, coming to MLS. Can we expect new league-wide rules and protocols for security and media access? What else will Messi’s massive celebrity change about the league?

I haven’t made it all the way through, have about 10 mins left. But I agree that it’s great to have pulido rounding into form. I criticized earlier in the season because pulido was everywhere except where he needed to be which was in the box, but this game perfectly encapsulated what he brings to the table. He facilated everyone around him, that no look Leibold pass in the first half was a great example, and then having the touch to get 2 goals was great. Had he been able to get a bit more of a touch on that Castellanos eventual goal that would of been a hat trick and I’m not sure he’s had one since being here. With Johnny being out and aging, Alan being able to more or less carry the attack has been huge in this streak. It’s mentioned that there’s a good chance he’s gone, but it’s worth mentioning that the other team that was interested in him, cruz azul, reportedly came to terms with their first choice in Aguirre. I think ESPN deportes was reporting that Aguirre was caught at the airport in Mexico City with the intention of finalizing and signing his deal. That would reportedly cut down his reported suitors and make it a 2 horse race in Chivas and sporting. I still don’t understand the desire for Chivas as sporting more than likely won’t sell him for cheap if they do at all mid season, and if they wait until his contract expires that’s about the time Macias is due back from injury and it’s rumored that Pauvnovic views Macias as important in his plans and re-signing him a priority. So unless he’s just absolutely ok with going to be a backup much like Chivas did with Oribe Peralta after pulido left where he spent the last year or so of his career riding the bench and coming on as an occasional sub I don’t see it more than a smoke screen pulido’s agent could be using as a way to get him a better contract with sporting or someone else.

But as the resident pessimist I had a few things. I got downvoted and a few responses to my opinion on McIntosh. I still don’t think he’s a great option. Nothing Ben does instills confidence to me other than an occasional spot starter. At the very least, I don’t think his performance has been much better than john’s which again warrants the question why John has been more or less in the dog house. Even routine plays I still feel like Ben makes them look nervy, sure he wasn’t done favors by his backline. But, he also doesn’t do much to make you feel like he’s fully in control in his position.

I also still have a problem with Peter. Shocking, as someone who has been on the “vermes out” train before it was trendy still doesn’t like Peter. But, I don’t get the pension for coming out and flipping the bird to fans after a win. Khiry scored one goal and did ok and he’s ready to go out and say Khiry should of antagonized the crowd for rightfully, I might add, being negative about him. And one could argue that is also a result of Peter. Yeah, the renewal is absolutely garbage. But, he’s also the one who went to bat in the media for Khiry being an amazing, under utilized player and Khiry went on to be absolutely awful and basically forced the team to find Agada. It’s just my opinion, but Peter and co should be actively working on repairing the relationship with the fan base not talking shit in press conferences and brew house rants. He’s more or less put Khiry in a position where he has to back it up again since we are more than likely getting a good dose of Khiry on the wing since tzionis is apparently going on international duty unless Johnny is back. I get this is supposed to be the Khiry role, and obviously just like everything else when it works it works, but why not get afrifa some mins at home. If Khiry is a better winger who can be a 9 if you need him to be, why not develop the actual young 9 by getting game mins in the first team.

I also absolutely hate the token subs at the end. I believe radoja got a yellow in the 2nd half if I heard it right on the broadcast, I was a few beers in by that point so I could be wrong, I don’t get why if you had the option of putting Felipe and/or Roger in to drop remi back why you wait until stoppage time to do that.

Overall, good performance. I think we could have done better in the first half, but the team settled in and got a win. Excited to see what we do against lafc next weekend, gonna try and make it since I have a non gig weekend.

I agree about vermes. He has set up Shelton for failure and most animosity around Shelton isn’t so much that people hate him as a player/person as they hate vermes for playing him and paying him 600k per year. That failure of vermes is encapsulated in khiry’s performance and results on the pitch and is so representative of why people are #VermesOut. And for him to say “I told you so…” or “khiry should have done this to the crowd…” is just so damn out petulant. Anything short of an MLS cup is not enough to save his job for me. He needs to be gone or have his role reduced.

The pod touched on it: why were the results so terrible prior to May? It wasn’t just injury. A significant portion was, but game management, rigidity and predictable style were bigger – and the failure to adapt or change was absolutely criminal.

Sub management – Holy hell, there is no reason to not play/develop afrifa. Radoja needed off. He got a yellow and committed two fouls back to back. Keeping him on was risky as you never know when PRO will enforce repeated infringement. We lagged a bit and fresher legs could have maybe given us those 3 more goals to satisfy the need for another 7-1 blowout. Waiting until 85th minute + means wearing down our key players for no reason. Again – vermes issue, right?

I honestly don’t care (that much) about the keeper situation. I get the points from both camps, but also don’t think that is the difference maker for success/failure. Our failures started up the pitch and frankly neither Timmy replacement will bail us out if we keep making those same mistakes. Neither will be world class and so will make mistakes on par with league expectations. I would rather spend that salary cap on a deeper roster to address core issues.

Thanks for the insight on Liga MX!

I am with Robert on the question of why we were so bad before May. I absolutely think it’s still worth bringing up because what happens at the end of the season can be directly affected by the results of those first 10 games. I know that when we win, it allows us to forget the bad times, but I don’t think we should.

Injuries are definitely a reason why we played so poorly. I agree that having those players back had positively impacted our play in a huge way, but I agree with Robert that we still should have been able to pull out more than 3 points in that whole stretch. That comes down to roster construction which definitely falls in the realm of PV’s powers. Sure, MLS won’t have as deep of rosters as La Liga or Premier League, but that doesn’t mean that we have to be satisfied with getting killed when our best players are out. Portland aren’t great now either, but they were missing as many key players or more during that same stretch of ten games and gained 11 points. I only use them because they’re the first team I can think of that was as injury riddled as us.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy with the team and glad we are winning. I even think that PV is doing some good things and subbing decently well (except for the Austin game). But, I refuse to let the recent run of success completely wash away the utter trash that we put up with through the first ten games. If we do, PV will continue to have no accountability for when we play bad.

Agree jdkus. I often disagree with Robert, but I think it’s fair to bring up the issue of roster construction again. And for him to say it “irks” him. One of the primary #VermesOut talking points on the pod for the first 1/3 of the season was poor roster construction. And now it’s seems to be spun as apologist argument. I don’t really care one way or the other but it seemed weird for Cody to push back on, unless it was “for content”.

Chad Smith

I’m with Robert too. And I think Thad’s point was that they looked promising in the first three games, then fell off a cliff. The underlying numbers were bad on average in games 4 through 10.

I always believed they were better than their record said, and I even Tweeted it in the middle of their awful start (which makes me look quite brilliant now: https://twitter.com/PlayFor90/status/1640472954730364928)

It’s still concerned they were SOOO bad in those first 10-games. It’s a fair take Robert.

David in the Chat

Ok but is Tim Leibold handsome or nah?

Chad Smith

I’m gonna say nah. Who am I to talk though? He’s definitely super fit, but I think he’s a bit awkward. Since we’re rating dudes, David in the Chat, where do you come down?

Can I get a top 5 from you? (It’s much safer than either of us doing a top 5 of the Current).

David in the Chat

Spots 1-4 are JFR. Number 5 is Khiry.

Eric Vidoni

I mean, probably every guy on the team considered is more handsome than most of us. Beauty and fitness often go hand in hand.

Unrelated wild speculation. Any chance that giving the captain’s armband to Daniel was because Alan has already informed the team he’s not coming back? Alan has been a regular backup captain choice since he got here. I could see Vermes choosing to go with a committed veteran over a guy on his way out.

kcrews123

I was wondering the same thing about the captain armband. It could be just reading too much into it, but I wouldnt be surprised either
