Across State Lines: Robert Palmer and Newtown Pride FC win TST
The Soccer Tournament last weekend in Cary, North Carolina turned out to be an extremely enjoyable and seemingly successful tournament with the winner taking home $1m in prize money. The tournament turned out to be extremely entertaining, especially with the targeted scoring at the end of the game.
For those that didn’t watch, after the forty minute game was over, the teams entered the targeted scoring phase of the game, where the target score was set as the winning team’s score plus one. So if a team was winning 3-2, the target score was four. The winning team just needed to score one, but if the losing team managed to score two in the above example, they would win the game. Every five minutes of targeted scoring time, one player from each team would leave the field, creating more space for teams on the 7v7 field as the time ticked by. It led to some exciting endings and some remarkable comebacks as well throughout the tournament, and the whole “ending on a goal” idea turned out to add to the excitement.
A number of players with Kansas City ties participated in the tournament, that were outlined last week in Across State Lines. One of the participating players with KC ties came away with a share of the prize money as former KC Comets player and Park University graduate, Robert Palmer and Newtown Pride FC came away with a 2-0 win in the final to take the championship and the prize.
In other news this week, a recently released Sporting KC II player is in the middle of a controversy in relation to his next move. Yeison Mejia, who mutually agreed to terminate his contract with Sporting’s MLS Next Pro side last week returned to Honduras and signed with FC Montagua. Things don’t appear to be that straight forward though as Mejia’s former club, Real Espana is arguing that Mejia signed a contract with the club through 2024 and is not eligible to sign with Montagua.
Montagua has argued that Mejia used a release clause in his contract with Real Espana that when he signed with SKCII he was signing as a free agent and was therefore free to sign with the club. They provided a letter that Real Espana sent to Sporting KC’s Technical Director Brian Bliss as proof of this.
The leadership of Honduras’s Liga Nacional has sided with Real Espana in this situation though and the two clubs are not apparently in negotiations over how to resolve the situation.
Here is the rest of this week’s update.
