Across State Lines: The Soccer Tournament Kicks Off
While the biggest soccer tournament of the year is right around the corner, another tournament kicked off this morning as The Soccer Tournament kicked off it’s fourth tournament today in Cary, NC. The largest tournament so far contains three different divisions for teams, a men’s division, a women’s division, and new this year, a mixed division. As with all three prior additions of the tournament, there are a number of players with ties to KC in the tournament.
On the men’s side there are 17 players with ties to KC, including two on the roster for defending champions, Bumpy Pitch FC in Mitchell Cardenas and Leroy Enzugusi. Most of the ties to KC are through the Comets, but there are players with ties to Sporting KC, Sporting KC II, and the Sporting academy as well.

On the women’s there’s a full team with ties to KC as Kansas City II is back for another year. Much of the rest of Kansas City II are young up and coming players.
US Women: Casey Loyd, Allie Long, Heather O’Reilly
Kansas City II: Mallory Weber, Kaylin Williams

The new mixed division may have the most fun connection of the tournament as former Sporting KC forward, CJ Sapong will be part of Hope Solo’s Solo FC mixed team for the tournament. It’s a throw back all the way to Sapong’s rookie year in 2011. Sapong is one of four players on that team with KC ties, including Kelsey Branson who just finished up a short term contract with the KC Current. Two of the players on Solo will be pulling double duty as Ashley Nick and Guerrero Pino will be playing in the women’s and men’s tournaments respectively. The two are joined by Phillip Ejimadu as three players with KC ties who will be pulling double duty in the tournament.
Solo FC: Kelsey Branson, Guerrero Pino, Ashley Nick, CJ Sapong

Jordi Quintilla, who has been a regular for FC St. Gallen in the Swiss Super League earned his second cup trophy after the 2015 US Open Cup.
