Dropped points has been the story for Sporting KC. They’ve now been outscored 8-1 at home in the second half this season after the Portland Timbers came back for a 3-3 draw.

At one point on Sunday, the live table showed them in 2nd place in the Western Conference. 3rd overall in Major League Soccer. But not for long.

Willy Agada bagged a brace and Dany Rosero dunked home another corner kick in a dominant first half. But a second half collapse doomed SKC once again.

Alan Pulido has been nursing an injury but was taken off the injury report ahead this match. Peter Vermes chose to start Agada with Pulido on the bench. The Nigerian got the scoring started in the 13th minute. Albeit with the help of two big deflections.

The Portland Timbers entered the matching having lost three straight. They weren’t able to plant the seeds of any offense, only blossoming one shot in the first half.

The only blemish of the first half from SKC was a mistake from Dany Rosero, who picked up a professional yellow before anything could develop. But he made up for that in the 38th minute when he threw down the axe for the second goal.

The third goal came just before the halftime whistle off a set piece. Walter dinked it to the far post for Robert Voloder who found Agada for a tap in.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before… but Sporting KC let them back into the match.

Willy Agada had been far from perfect. In spite of the two goals, he had a few mistakes in big moments. This includes a chance to put the game away in the 61st minute with a penalty kick. He was looking for a hat trick… but he couldn’t even find the frame of the goal.

The entire match changed after that moment.

Just three minutes later Portland was on the board with a PK of their own.

Two minutes after that, a second.

The whole stadium collectively clinched up with the LA Galaxy loss fresh in their minds. The home side was forced into their own half and making desperate stops. But the equalizer inevitably came in the 81st minute.

Sporting KC had a couple looks on goal throughout the ten minutes of stoppage time, but couldn’t get back the three points. They settle for one point which puts them in 7th place.

This Saturday is the long awaited Inter Miami match at Arrowhead Stadium. Will Lionel Messi play?

How can Tim Liebold, a defender with almost a decade of experience in German football, be making a mistake that costs his team a goal every. Single. Game.

InToTouch

well the simple answer to this question is that he doesn’t.

Except he does.

And I was nice. It was 2 goals on him this game. The PK and he lost his mark on the 2nd goal.

InToTouch

No one scored in the LAFC game so this is impossible.

So tired of this damn team man..it’s just exhausting to be a fan.

it’s time to demand change. VA has to go. I don’t understand what he did to deserve from another five-year contract. But I don’t want him here in five days. when someone is choking, you immediately do something to save their life, when sporting Kansas City chokes, you give the manager five more years.

at what point in time do we show Peter Vermes the door? Every year, it’s one disaster after the next, losses and choked matches. Vermis has shown that his team is incapable of holding a lead no matter how big it is. there is something very wrong with sporting Kansas City and after this many years, it can only start at the top. We need to clean house starting at the very very peak of the food chain.

Yep, this is definitely something that goes back multiple years at this point. We had that 2019 season where we finished 11th which was perhaps an early precursor to our current troubles – but at least we turned it around in 2020 and 2021. But then the low water mark of 12th place came in 2022, and Vermes was bafflingly awarded a contract extension after that season while the team was moving in the wrong direction. While PV certainly had plenty of goodwill in the bank to be given the chance to turn things around in 2023, a contract extension did not seem like a logical step at that time. We stumbled through the 2023 season and are now seeing the same old concerning patterns into 2024.

I strongly feel and have felt for a while that Sporting has not adapted with the changing times of the MLS in how we operate both on and off the field and that’s largely because we’ve allowed the same 1 person (PV) to control almost every aspect of the sporting side for 10+ years. Although Vermes is undoubtedly talented enough that our team is a top side when we’re on our A-game, we haven’t played at a consistently-great level in years, with no signs of things turning around soon. I just think that PV is too stuck in his own ways, and his ways are starting to look archaic at this point.

All good things must come to an end, and I feel like we’re approaching or maybe already at that time where PV’s reign needs to conclude and the torch should be passed. To me, I liken it to the situations with Arsene Wenger, Bill Belichick, heck even Jurgen Klopp who is leaving end of season, or whatever other great name you want to insert. Amazing run as a coach, but simply time to move on for all parties.

kcwookie

we have a different definition of the word amazing. If you look at a lot of our silverware, Jimmy provided it much more than Peter did. I’m tired of our side petering out all the time.

KCSpurs1996

Geez, I wrote that whole reply agreeing with everything you said and you’ve fixated on a single sentence to dispute. Look, I’m just as disappointed as you are with the team right now, but I’m not so jaded that I’m going to revoke credit from PV for all of the good things that have happened under his tenure. It can both be true that he’s been a great manager for us and that it is time for him to move on.

kcwookie

i’m very sorry, I am just way more frustrated with Vermes than you are. My frustration with Vermes is almost to the point of sharing for the other side to pummel us so that maybe we can get rid of him. Your comment was well thought out and very logical. My apologies for just being way too cynical and chromogen.

David in the chat

Jimmy Nielsen? Jimmy Medranda? Which Jimmy?

kcwookie

Jimmy Nielsen, master goalkeeper and game saver.

David in the chat

Not to be too pedantic but Jimmy got us 2 trophies. Tim also has 2. I think Meola also has 2.

I do not understand why Memo Rodriguez is wearing the number 8 shirt or starting. He’s a black hole in the XI

Mister Murse

Memo wasn’t the issue and if anything has done a solid job. His big drawback is a lack of speed, but again, that wasn’t the issue.

We bunkered way too soon and didn’t adapt to their midfield change. Then we put in a worthless striker who is being outscored by a center back.

InToTouch

are you serious? Look back at the goals and see where he is defensively on the ones SKC gave up and offensively on the ones they scored. The only positive I see there is his corner kick.

Tyler

Where is Salloi this season? He isn’t scoring goals or making an impact in the games. He shouldn’t be wearing the captain’s armband if he can’t control the game. When we lose momentum we crater hard. A captain on the field needs to get his men back frame, and Salloi isn’t putting up much of a fight…

InToTouch

Salloi has never been very good is the answer here

Sid Much Rock

Boy the crowd in the cauldron got ugly fast. Not sure who they wanted strung up higher PV or the refs.

I think we just need to find a way to clog the center when we’re holding these leads late in games. Memo ain’t it, Hernandez ain’t it. Is it Danny Flores? Is it that Thommy needs to be there and not already run ragged on the wing? Remember last year when we had Thommy spelled by Kinda or vice versa? That was handy.

InToTouch

That’s why Pulido is playing the 8-10 and everyone is bitching that he’s “out of position.” He’s doing at least two people’s jobs.

Howlie2

Remember when SKC lost the only 10ish they had on the roster (Kinda) and then promptly went out and spent big on a proper 10? Oh wait, eclipse day dreaming…instead SKC just slapped a #10 on Salloi and said, “dude is now a play making winger.”

Sheens

Yes! This is a point I made on the podcast this week. Daniel should not be the Captain. He’s a great guy, but the Captain should be a difference-maker on the field and he’s not performing this season. I often forget he’s on the field. When we tied the game I didn’t see him pushing the team to keep going. Perhaps in the locker, he possesses Captain-like traits and rallies the team together, but I do not see it on the field. If they are trying to pass the torch to a younger guy he’s not my first choice.

Mister Murse

I have definitely settled in on this issue In each late collapse, we needed someone to reset the mentality on the field. A huddle, a sharp command, a verbal check to get the team back in sync…. Salloi had the fewest touches of any outfielder vs portland. He doesn’t direct the game through movement, playmaking, or by example on hustle and effort. Like you said, we forget he is there. That isn’t captain material. That is dangerous beaurocratic mindset of “senority rules”.

Vermes failing to identify an on-field leader is equally responsible, since it has happened multiple games.

For the record, pulido also would never qualify as captain.
