New Sporting KC Owner Mallouk Plans to Spend “A Lot”

Back in January a rumor, that was later confirmed, broke that Sporting Kansas City had a new majority owner. Local Kansas City business owner, and previous minority owner, Peter Mallouk was purchasing a majority stake in Sporting KC from the Illig and Patterson families. It was big news.

Who is Sporting KC Minority Owner Peter Mallouk?

A few days after the rumor came out, Mallouk spoke to the Kansas City Star to lay out his plan.

Since then, it’s been pretty quiet. At media day, the KC Soccer Journal asked new President of Soccer Operations David Lee about the change. At the time, Lee and Mallouk hadn’t had a chance to talk about any changes in the budget since Lee had been so busy travelling with the team at preseason and trying to build a roster.

That silence ended in a surprising way on Friday. I had posted a story from the Star about billionaires in Kansas and Missouri and Mallouk had taken a noticeable jump on the Forbes list. Of course that drew the attention of some Sporting KC fans, with @KCSocWiz saying, “How much is he really willing to invest into SKC?”

To which Peter Mallouk himself hopped into the comments to say, “A lot.”

It’s definitely something anyone with any interest in the success of Sporting KC have to be thrilled to see.

Of course, “a lot” is fairly subjective. Back before Sporting KC acquired Alan Pulido and Gadi Kinda ahead of the 2020 season, they had spent almost nothing on transfer fees. They spent a record fee on Pulido and were rumored to have spent millions on Kinda.

After that, it was smaller fees, but some spending was happening. Then, ahead of the 2025 season, two fees around $4 million were spent for Designated Players Dejan Joveljic and Manu Garcia.

This offseason has seen attempts not to spend massively, but there have been plenty of fees paid. New signings Lasse Berg Johnsen, Capita Capemba and Diego Borges were all rumored to have fees attached to them. That doesn’t even include the failed transfers for Rogers Mato and Cesar Inga.

The question becomes; will Sporting KC join the upper echelon of spending in the league? Time will tell.

Since 2014, Chad Smith has been deeply involved in covering Kansas City soccer. He's written about Sporting KC, the KC Current and SKC II for numerous platforms, including The Blue Testament, which was the precursor to the KC Soccer Journal. While his initial connection to Sporting KC was established in Phoenix covering preseason, he now resides in the Kansas City area, offering thorough analysis and a strong commitment to local soccer.

2 words… Egyptian King.

Hopeful sign. I just hope they spend across the club and not try to buy a talisman from Europe.

Mattscho

Depends on the talisman, doesn’t it? I mean, Vinni Jr or Mbappe, players at the peak of their powers, that’d be a bit of all right. But, honestly, I’d love to see a high end right back and upgrades at center back, left wing.

KC_Outsider

Welcome news indeed if it’s done intelligently, and not like past iterations of the Fire, flailing around for a “big name” with no coherent idea how to build a team around him. Or, frankly, the rumors about SKC trying for Ronaldo.

And so far I have reasonable confidence that current management DOES have a coherent plan and I’m fine with waiting it out. I’ve been through many-year rebuilds in other sports and they’re worth doing right.

Awesome that he even cares enough to read the comments.

Quick Test: Hey Peter, hows the wife and kids?

Totally the real Peter Mallouk

They are great, thanks for asking.
