Why can’t Sporting KC close out matches?
The tense final moments every match are taking their toll on me.
It’s been a problem which plagued Sporting KC for many years now. They can utterly dominate a match, but are in danger of giving up a late equalizer after failing to get that extra goal and secure the result.
This happened once already this season (albeit rather unfairly) against Philadelphia, and the entire second half last weekend against San Jose felt like a goal was coming.
But the season is young. The offense has shown signs of life and just how good they can be. If Alan Pulido gets on one of his hot streaks, the rest of the league is in trouble.

For whatever reason this team has had problems with defending the back post on crosses for as long as I can remember regardless of who is in the back line. For awhile it seemed like the problem was the lack of pressure on crossers but that was solved and it still happened, then it seemed like the problem was zonal marking in the box leaving spaces open but they switched to man marking more often than not and it still happened. Now it looks like good old-fashioned “getting beat.” Whether that’s a defender losing their mark as they move through the box or a defender getting beat in the air on the jump, they just lose those battles in the box far too often. Given that most tight games end with teams packing the box and whipping balls in. . .you have disaster.
