When the Kansas City Current take the field at CPKC Stadium for the first time on March 16, the club will usher in their new era in style!

The Current unveiled a set of new Nike primary and secondary kits ahead of their historic season.

The Heartland Red primary kit features teal stripes down each side of the jersey. Superimposed in a darker shade of red are the same three rivers seen on the KC Current crest.

“The thoughtful and intentional design reflects the club’s identity in multiple ways. It provides a sense of joyful expression, it celebrates the current energy around the team and the Kansas City community, and it draws inspiration from the landscape of the Missouri River,” Current VP of Marketing Jocelyn Monroe said.

The Current’s kit drop is part of a league-wide release of new primary and secondary kits. For the first time, all 14 NWSL clubs will enter a season with new primary and secondary kits.

According to the NWSL, all secondary kits are designed with a gradient using each club’s colors which is used to signify “strength of the collective.”

The Current’s secondary kit features a Teal Rising a gradient, going from teal to white. The jersey names and numbers will be in Storm Blue.

The new secondary is an updated look to the 2023 kit which was a solid white top with teal shorts. While it is not an all-teal kit like some fans were hoping for, the introduction of the teal gradient brings a splash of the desired color into the jersey. The NWSL release also states that there would no longer be white shorts for players “based on practical concerns from players.”

“This historic uniform refresh with Nike exemplifies our continued commitment to raising the bar and elevating the NWSL brand with vibrant kits that symbolize the powerful connection between the clubs, players, fans and our communities,” NWSL Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer Julie Haddon said in a release. “We are excited to build upon this energetic moment as we approach our 2024 season kickoff.”

The United Way is the front jersey sponsor, with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City and Ally Bank featured on the sleeves.

I just can’t get into red as their primary color. They push teal so hard, then wear the primary color of many of KC’s soccer rivals. Lots of teams wear red; the teal is unique and they should wear that, especially as a team named for water.

I agree. Teal and Navy, with Teal primary would be cool and different. Although maybe too similar to the SKC colors. Although that would allow us fans of both to represent all of KC soccer more easily. I do like the teal fade though.

Maybe the teal is too “light” to be consider the dark jersey so it can only be secondary?

I think you both make good points.

As for light and dark, I think you just need one of each, so it seems teal (turquoise really, but I’ll stop) can be considered light.

The heartland kit is too subtle the more I look at it. You can hardly see the pattern.

I don’t hate the gradient kit and the socks and shorts absolutely make the look (the socks and shorts help the heartland one too). BUT think of the fans. Fans don’t buy the socks and shorts. So, you are getting a mostly white kit. Sell a teal shirt! Everyone would buy it! I guess until it’s a plain teal t-shirt.
