Across State Lines: South Georgia Will Not Compete in 2026 USL League One Season

The season for USL teams all kick off in the next handful of weeks. Except for one of those teams, who announced just this past week that instead of playing they will be sitting out the 2026 USL1 season. The South Georgia Tormenta FC announced that they would not be fielding a team in 2026 in USL’s League One season. Reports from the USL’s Players Association said that due to unresolved financial instability, Tormenta FC had failed to maintain their workers’ compensation coverage, a mandatory requirement in their Collective Bargaining Agreement. The league was reportedly going to have a type of dispersal draft for the 16 players Tormenta had under contract, but now that is reportedly not going to happen and the players under contract to Tormenta will get the minimum severance required by the League One CBA, three months of pay. This put those players, including former Sporting KC II midfielder, Vitor Dias into a bind as most of the teams in the USL Championship and League One have their rosters mostly finalized ahead of the start of the season and will now be scrambling, not just to find new employment, but getting out of leases and potential immigration questions with the club not playing this year.

Dias was actually the last new player to sign for the Tormenta, signing back near the end of January with the club.

Another former player in the USL, is Memo Rodriguez, as the former Sporting KC midfielder has signed on this season to play with the Sacramento Republic in the USL Championship.
